In America, that style of collar (seen on the majority of the male uniform shirts) is referred to as a "crew neck."

The female uniform wore by Uhura and other women for the majority of TOS is a scoop neck.

Didn't the security detail in TMP have "armor ". I assume that you mean something like that?

Maybe the 2nd ugliest uniform ever on Star Trek. Probably would be very helpful if someone were tackling you but useless with phaser fire.

I was trying to determine what was meant by plastic kneecaps... I had thought he was referring to body armor (ala TMP).

Ultimately, besides the production costs of the 60s, I suppose not having armor as part of the uniform could be the desire not to show star fleet as a "military" arm of the federation. After all, you don't normally see scientists landing on Antarctica in full body armor.

We would call those "knee pads". Not sure why the Landing party would need them, unless they were planning some sort of tactical operation or engaging in extreme sports. Usually they're meeting with local officials or scanning the local flora and fauna. You know, diplomacy and exploration.

Briefly: the black T-shirts seen in "The Naked Time" were just for show. They were not really part of the costume. Their short sleeves would have made a visible line under the long sleeve of the uniform tunic.

The actors did wear sleeveless black undershirts at least some of the time, and those were either for warmth or to avoid showing skin at the waistline.
