Yep! Got this as soon as I saw it. It is an excellent transfer, even when being shown on an HDTV. The compression artifacts aren't terribly noticable and the English subs are very good too. No real "all you base" issues at all that I can recall. It's been a while since I played it through, but I do recall it being well worth the purchase. IIRC, there's an extra disc in there with the most recent "Yamato Rebirth" movie that came out a few years back (not 2199 related). Not the best incarnation of classic Yamato, but definitely better than 2520, IMO.

As far as I know, that isn't a real product. The Yamato 2199 DVDs do not have English subtitles. Only the BD had them, or the Star Blazers 2199 DVDs and BDs have them, but only up to Volume 4 is currently available.

That and as far as I know there is no box set release of Yamato 2199. There has been a box released for a set via Yamato Crew I believe, but that's not exactly the same thing, nor is that the box art for it (it has Yamato and Dessler's flagship if I recall correctly).

I might be a reasonable bootleg with all the Yamato 2199 episodes burned to DVD.

I have them. They have subtitles. If it's not legit then that's a different kettle of fish. For an unofficial release, if that's what it is, it's quite well done.

It doesn't look like a legit North American release, anyway. Most likely it's something made for the Malay black market. I have seen many like it in Chinatown for different anime and live action j-dramas. They vary widely in quality of translations. It's funny when they blindly rip off fansub scripts, and leave in the "this is by fans for fans - do not buy" parts. :)

I bought/watched the live-action movie and thought it was pretty good based on the amount of material they had to get in there.

The Yamato live-action movie is alright. It does limit the chance of sequels however and did try to mash in the plots from both the first TV series and the second animated movie (Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato).

Also the ship to ship action was more in line with actual space battle styling...meaning all the shots were way in the distance, rather than up close and personal like most modern sci-fi battles. That did mean that the wave motion gun hits were quite as fun (no up close shredding of the enemy ships) as most things were a lot of explosions in the distance.

Also the Gamilas were sort of not like I like them. I like them to be sort of humanoid and have emotions and goals. Dessler became a favorite of mine during the second series and the mutual rescue situations in later films and series was fun for me.

What will be weird will be just how they pull off a live action Star Blazer movie in a couple of years time.

Its Japan, if they want to do a sequel, I'm sure they'll figure out a way.

But it has been a couple years, so I doubt we'll see a sequel.

Pleasant surprise to see a thread on this here.

Watched this a while back. Went into it with serious misgivings given how reboots are, this show being released after Yoshinobu Nishizaki's accidental death in 2010, numerous attempts to capture the old show's glory reaching way back to "Searching For Odin", new style for the character designs on the heels of numerous other shows in the new styles. I'm not a big fan of the new animation styles since 1992. Kazuhiku Udagawa and Kenzou Koizumi defined the look of these characters, so it was hard to accept the look of the new treatment without any hint of their artstyle present. Warmed up to the show after a bit. They kept the overall arc but threw in a bunch of new characters and crammed in new story. One bonus for me was seeing Franken from Yamato III. As for the concerns of if there will be an Andromeda in the new movie I think there will be since Hajikata Kanjo was put into the new series and the Gatlantians warring with Gamilus. I talked to a friend early this past year and he commented about the new movie and the buzz about the 2014 follow up movie and he felt if the Andromeda was one of the biggies that everyone loved in Saraba / Yamato 2 then it's virtually a forgone conclusion it will be in there lest they gut one of the major appeals of the franchise. One of the big things I loved was the amount of time they spent on the battle at Balun and the Warp gates. There was much tactical thinking that went into the battle and the storyboarding in the entire 2199 series that your almost never see and much of the shows these days. CGI can do only so much. And it was good since Final to see Okita done well even it it was a reboot. My big concern having now seen 2199 is that all the resetting and conflicts of the story that wrecked continuity before will not be repeated. ( Saraba...forget it...Yamato 2 cancels that....Yamato III....forget that Final cancels that. You get the drift. ) The basic feel of Matsumoto's designs are there in the new style. My big fear going in is that it would feel like Yamato 2520 in the art and not have the visual traction the original show had solidified under Udagawa and Koizumi's lead animating. Was pleasantly surprised after viewing the entire season. Will be looking forward to the new movie.

We will see if there is a second series or yet another film announcement come December when "Ark of the Stars" comes out. It seems like a given since they are addressing the Comet Empire and putting people and things into place early such as Hijikata and the several crew members that were not seen until either Yamato 2 or Yamato III.

What they do with the changes will make moving forward interesting. Especially when it comes to anything Gamilas. Also the question on what they will do with Yamatamoto duing the Comet Empire arc now that not only have they changed the gender, but made her very popular as a character. Rie Takana brings that a bit with her cool characters.

Things are happening. "Voyage of Rememberance" comes out, but the hype is for "Ark of the Stars"

A trailer for instance (I really action packed trailer)

The Comet Empire theme is in full force.

Wow - that is a really cool looking teaser. Looks like we'll get to see a fully intact WWII version of Yamato, although I'm not quite sure why. Does the new Cosmo DNA return the planet to the way it was before the planet bombs by reversing time? That should put her back under water again, I would think. Somewhat confusing, but really enticing nonetheless. Thanks for posting!

There are two possibilites for that Yamato that I can think of.

One is a Planet Phantom situation like in Yamato III. Where the crew arrives someplace that shows them dreamlike images of things. I this case, an original Yamato sunk in a forest. I'm going to guess this is the case based on the reactions from Kodai and the science officer girl.

The other is that this is part of the Cosmo Reverse System's work, and they've not got the oceans to come back year. Though there should not be a real Yamato in that condition to find, since the real wreck is in two or more pieces with most of it upside down.

Nice trailer. Thank you for sharing that. Interesting that this seems to show a concurrent story to the time of 2199 since we see Okita still alive. I wonder if the will have Xabara in it and if they will keep her Yamato 2 design. from the trailer I wonder if the Gatlantian we see is redesign of Zodar as well.

Just found this poking around youtube. I hope they release more trailers with more tidbits that hint.

Basically this is a setup for a possible future series involving the Comet Empire.

This takes place during Yamato's voyage home from Iscandar, between episodes 24 and 25 of Yamato 2199. They encounter a Comet fleet near the edge of the Large Magellenic Cloud that demands Yamato's surrender. Yamato's crew is trying to get back to Earth as quickly as possible to save Earth from the destruction caused by the Gamilas planet bombs, so they warp away from the Comet Empire ships.

Somehow they get a bit lost and in some weird space where they find a planet and a giant ship that the Comet Empire fleet is also looking for.

The Comet Empire fleet commander (the guy on the poster and in the trailer) is named Goran Dagamu.

The poster also shows us that the Gamilas commander Berger survived the Battle of the Rainbow Cluster, along with the purple multi-deck carrier. He seems to have joined up with this female general with a couple of battlecarriers and is somehow involved in this plot.

It is likely that the film's plot will be framed by Yamato's return to Earth and reporting in to Hijikata about the threat they encountered. This would make sense of them being shown arriving at Earth with the marine helmets on the Moon and battleship Kirishima waiting for them near Earth.

Episode 25 basically had them having left Iscandar two months earlier and nearing Balun so they could us it to warp to the Milky Way faster. So this film mostly takes place during those two months.

When I see the helmet on the end of the gun I instantly think Planet Brumus. ( Sorry I forgot what the Japanese name for that was. Defaulting to the English name. )

They just called it Planet 11 from what I remember. (Planet 10 was destroyed by Gamilas). This was in the days when Pluto was the ninth planet.

I've been looking at the various trailers on YouTube and noticed one after a trailer for "Voyage Of Remembrance" that has a still of the Yamato I front of this planet you mention. The narrator says "You are our enemy Gatlantis." It suggests to me that this planet in the picture might be a redesigned Gatlantis / Comet Empire. The surrounding setting around the planet is similar to what was seen in the envelope that surrounded Gatlantis / Comet Empire in Yamato 2.

The art and updated effects are nice from what we can see in a trailer. It has been over 35 years since the Comet Empire arc was animated back in 1978-79. And that was basically the rise of Yamato Fever.

Is it happening again? Is Voyager Entertainment missing out on waves of it in North American, or are they getting better profit from foreigners importing Japanese BD over their Star Blazers 2199 line?

Will the show go on to another year beyond 2199? Zordar's going to want to know what happened to one of his fleets, and if the whisper "Yamato" comes up, he might want to find it. And what of Dessler? I honestly think he survived. What will become of him in this new timeline? Gamilas is more or less safe (last we saw it), but that could be temporary along with Iscandar. What direction will they go, if any?

    Sorry I can't help myself...

Question: What do the Gamilus feed the Zaltis?

    Answer: Zalti crackers.

    ( giggle...snork )

    Carry on....

Some are reporting that the recently released compelation film ("Voyage of Rememberance" or "A Voyage to Remember") is not worth seeing as it adds nothing and takes too much away from the 26 episode run of a very good space opera series that is Yamato 2199. The other real updates are some detail changes in the large battle and 5.1 surround sound. No reports have said that anything was different enough to warrent watching it over the series aside from seeing the trailer on a big screen for the new Comet Empire centered movie coming out in December. (Maybe there will be more on the BD?)

Mind you the original series has a compelation movie which I also find hard to watch, but it did great in Japan leading to a second film and series in 1978. This time I think the "Ark of the Stars" film as well as the Yamato 2199 series is what sells this to greater things.
