"A little too much LDS"

Any Mormons reading this board? I've always been mildly curious how that particular line from TVH came across.

I think the movie made it incredibly obvious that Kirk meant LSD. I highly doubt this line made any Mormons want to "boycott" the film.

Never meant to suggest they would, actually. The Mormons I know have a very good sense of humor about their faith. (The Church even advertises in conjunction with the "Book of Mormon" musical produced by the South Park guys. That takes a lot of class, IMO.)

If anything, I think the line shows that the LDS church doesn't exist anymore (or at least under the same name) in the 23rd Century. Otherwise Kirk may have known better than to make that particular mistake.

Or he made that mistake b/c he knew LDS stood for something, and couldn't quite remember what, so he just re-ordered the letters out of habit...

I was living in the heart of Mormon country at the time and I can assure you the line was very well received. I remember it being the first thing a few people mentioned when talking about the movie.

I didn't even make the connection to the Mormons until now. I always took it as Kirk's inability to remember the exact name of that psycho drug ... LSD, LDS, DSL ... whatever.

Although intended simply as Kirk getting the letters mixed up, perhaps in Kirk's time there actually is a drug called "LDS", hence the confusion?

I seriously doubt any intent was there to say anything about the Mormon Church or to imply anything about it's state in the 23rd century, or whatever. I doubt the idea even on the minds of the writers of the movie.

It was a joke, another "fish out of water joke" to show how out of touch Kirk, Spock and the rest of our characters were with the 1986 setting.

Kirk knew from history readings about this time period -or more accurately the 1960s/70s where Spock's human "character" supposedly burnt himself out on drugs at Berkley- the names of various drugs but the information wasn't meaningful or relevant enough to him and his daily life in the 23rd century to remember precisely what these drugs were called.

He knew the three letters in it, it began with an L... then there was a D and an S, but I don't know which order... Think, Kirk, think! Well, I have a 50/50 shot of getting it right. "...LDS."

That's it. Just one of many jokes on how out-of-touch Kirk. et. al. were with the 20th century. Nothing to say about the LDS Church at all. As for them being offended, my experience has Mormons generally being very, very open-minded in these regards and not being so quick to judgment and offense when it comes to things against them. Remember, these people have to deal with *a lot* from people of other religions and the world at large they've got a thick-skin about these things.

That and Taylor's response, which is to look at Kirk after he said it as if, "Yeah, him and you both." Kirk thought he was perfectly cool, and didn't realize how odd his own behavior was while trying to cover for Spock's.
