So who's liking the 2014 TARDIS console room?

Judged by roundels alone, the War Doctor's console room b!tch-slaps all of the other NuWho ones.

Going off-topic a bit, I was thrilled to see the McGann-esque TARDIS clone from The Lodger. It added a bit of grandeur to proceedings

I prefer the coral dome of Eccleston and Tennant. It was vast and had an alien quality to it.

Smith's first console room was bizarre, and I never warmed to it (and from what I hear neither did the production crew).

The current one is ok - and looks much better with bookshelves etc - but it feels very cramped and claustrophobic for some reason.

I like the new Tardis, is cool, the Daleks' eyes in the wall are such a genial idea!

I don't think they said the roundels were based on Dalek eyes -- they're too big for that. Rather, IIRC, they were based on the interior structure of the mold the prop department uses to make Daleks' upper domes.

Kind of funny the Doctor misses the 'round things' when they're clearly still there, although not quite the same as the classic series (But then again the roundels changed quite a bit in size and general looks throughout the show.)

His actual line was that he felt there should be "more round things," which acknowledges that there are some.

I really like it' The only problem with the other one was it was too dark and murky, now it's pretty much the best TARDIS of the revival.

I'm not thrilled with it, though the new lighting and added set dressing doesn't hurt. It just looks too cheap. Like, there's certain angles such as the up-angle looking at Clara in the opening of Robot of Sherwood where we're just staring at these vast, smooth areas of painted plywood and it looks really bad.

I think the reason they went with the redesign is partially because of the 50th anniversary. The console itself (apart from the time rotor) is very classic series with a few modern touches such as the scanner that Christopher mentioned.

Same with the 'face in space' and general look of the opening titles last year-a sort of homage to the older sequences.

The browner look I think also makes it look a bit like the console room Tom Baker started using in "Masque of Mandragora" although that only was around for that season I think.

For some time I wondered how the Eccleston/Tennant console might look if the scrapyard "bits & bobs" were removed. So the other weekend I took a Poser based mesh made and shared by a fan named Arjin and did just that. As a temporary "stop gap", I positioned a "series 18" Tom Baker inspired console model I made to occupy the now empty stations. Another short term solution was using CastIronFlamingo's Baker/Davison era control room. Finally, I topped it with a "holographic" time rotor.

I'm not sure if the idea "gels" or not, but it was an interesting exercise..

(The Doctor is a combination of various DAZ items fitted to the Michael 3 mesh.)

Sincerely,

Bill

I absolutely love it. Though, I think the walls are TOO Classic Era for the General Audience.

I think Late Matt Smith/Early Capaldi is the closest you can get with the walls to being like classic Serials

I've liked this basic console room design ever since it debuted in "The Snowman" -- it's the first console room in the new series that brings back the high-tech look from the original series. I never cared for the Eccleston/Tennant console room, and the first Smith console room was a garish nightmare. This console room is much nicer, and the new additions add character. I hope they keep this basic set intact for a long time to come.

Although I wouldn't mind more round things.

I wonder if they lowered the floor a bit. I seem to remember the time rotor in a more central, elevated position.

The control panels on the rails surrounding the central rotor are a nice touch.

I do like the new control, much better than the Eccelston/Tenant control room except it could do with a few more round things.
