1) Groot is practically a super genius in the comics.
2) Again in the comics, he says "I am Groot" not because that's his name (everyone in his species sounds like they're saying the same thing), but simply because that's all his stiffened larnyx can vocalize. The "We are Groot" bit implies that not be the full case in the movie version, though.
3) Rocket does understand him just fine in the comics. It's not an extension of Rocket's ego or anything else. It's something about his inflections if I recall correctly, plus Groot having some kind of mutation that makes him sympathetic to small mammals. Regardless, both Rocket and Maximus were able to understand him just fine.

Dancing Groot will be getting a Funko POP figure

Also: of the ten MCU movies to date, ten have starred straight male white leads (all of whom except Thor are Americans, though even he speaks with a much more Yank-ish accent than his father and brother) . True, the franchise has a solid number of great other-than-white supporting characters in Rhodes, Fury, and that Falcon guy, plus May and Skye, and in this movie, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot are all other-than-white to varying degrees, depending on how you count the ethnicty of voice actors, and The Collector isn't Anglo. Still, as good as Pratt was, it could have been nice to see a Hispanic or Asian or something lead. Or, y'know, a woman? A short-haired woman to pair up with the long-haired Gamora, maybe?

Keep that PC bullshit out of the MCU movies please. They are trying to be somewhat faithful to the comics, instead of making random changes for the sake of it.

I for one like that Starlord and Tony Stark aren't being played by women.

Ummm.... Thor's accent is in no way "Yank-ish."

The Marvel movies could use something, god knows, particularly Thor - the character was unremarkable in The Avengers, but his stand-alone movies have been plodding, loud and dull. Given that the most sexual tension going on in those flicks is between Thor and Loki, they might well borrow another page from Marvel comics themselves - where Thor is now a woman.

How do you feel about Heimdall being played by Idris Elba, then?

:)

He doesn't make much of an impression. Not bad, but nothing standout about his role. All of Thor's buddies from Asgard in his movies have this problem.

But at least they aren't boring like Jane or annoying like Darcy.

Why is it that whenever someone mentions "PC Bullshit", they then post some of the most exclusionary stuff possible?

Besides, it's not like they don't have non WASP-male. characters. I'd love a movie about the new Miss Marvel.

I enjoyed this movie.

It was different, and refreshing to see something other than "the main guys" up on the screen and done well.

I loved Groot and Rocket.

Lots of action, humor. Truly a fun time at the movies except for the two nerds next to me who wouldn't SHUT THE **** UP the whole movie because they were so busy imposing their gushing opinions on everyone around them.

Uh, why?

Gender or race aren't really central to these characters so they could easily be changed without hurting the integrity of the stories. These characters are about their superpowers and often about their emotional trauma.

Changing their race or gender wouldn't really make a difference in any negative way but it would be more inclusive while at the same time being less boring and repetitive. Win/win situation, really. Especially if the want to play the whole reboot-game, too to sell the same product over and over.

The same reason that getting an asian chick to play the Black Panther, a white guy to play Luke Cage, or a latino woman to play Kato.

Caucasian males are just as ethnic as any of those options, and are just as much a part of their characters as any of the others are to theirs.
