Episodes for next week, after the lengthy discussion of the portrayal of Vulcans in Broken Bow we have decided to watch the Vulcan three parter in S4 of Enterprise.

ENT - 4x07 - The Forge
ENT - 4x08 - Awakening
ENT - 4x09 - Kir'Shara

Ah I'm so sad that I missed the call last night. As I was up at 5am - which is normal for my work week - I thought I'd have a couple of hours sleep pre-call so that I could stay more active and alert through it, but that turned out to be a terrible idea. My alarm went off, I responded to the post, then thought 'right, get up and get a coffe...' and that was my lot. Asleep again until this morning. I even bulk watched the episodes in the afternoon.

Anyway... here are my belated thoughts.

Broken Bow: Maybe because I like Archer and the crew a lot, I really enjoyed rewatching this. It's interesting for me to see the 'birth' of our ability to travel beyond our own system and interact with others. It was also interesting to see the formation of the crew. They started off with Archer and Trip bonding quite well together, which ultimately sets their relationship off quite well. Then you see that Archer, who is fulfilling the ambition of his father, has an issue with the Vulcans during the argument about the Klingon (talking about knocking T'Pol on her ass), and hitting the Vulcans where it hurts with 'when your logic doesn't work, you raise your voice... you've been on Earth too long'. I also instantly like Phlox when he calls human anatomically simply but says that they make up for it with optimism and egg drop soup. The only real downside is the need to get T'Pol and Trip half naked, rubbing ointment into each other. That was completely unnecessary. 4/5

The Cage: Well, I bloody like the Cage, and I love Pike, and I think it's generally one of the best episodes of early Trek (and you can't get much earlier than The Cage). I think I the ideas in this episode were incredibly strong and very interesting. I don't know the full story behind the switch to Kirk, but I think this episode was excellent. I love the scene when the doctor is talking to Pike and says that he treats everybody on the ship as if they're human except for himself. It's a shame I missed the call because I wonder how Emily feels about this episode, being such a big TOS fan. 55

If Memory Servers: Well, this felt like a massive shock to the system watching this back. It looks absolutely stunning, and the vibe is so, so different - in a good way and in a bad way. I can see why some fans say that it's 'no my Trek', because if 'their Trek' is TOS or TNG, then off course it's not that Trek. I still think it is Trek, it's just its own thing. It would have been hard to avoid that after 40 or 50 years of technological advancement and trying t cater towards a wider audience. Of course, they could have made it look like old Trek, but that would have been very uncomfortable viewing for those outside of the Trek bubble. It would have been very difficult to avoid it looking like a parody. It might well have struck a cord with the Trek fandom, but I suspect it would have been less well received outside of it. The episode itself was good, I thought they did a very good modernisation of The Cage, didn't tread on m/any toes, and generally told a coherent story. My overall feeling was 'I can't wait for Strange New Worlds'. 4/5

Anyway, I'll try to be there next weekend. I hope everyone enjoyed this weeks episodes.

It's a real shame you missed this one, there was some real dislike towards Enterprise coming through in the discussion even though everyone generally seemed to like this episode. A lot of the talk was about the Vulcan's and how they were depicted hence the Vulcan trilogy for next week.

It was Harry, wasn't it? I bet it was Harry :D

He may have had a thing or two to say, but I dare say he was alone.

I can certainly sympathize with you being tired I am normally up by 10 on a Sunday after these sessions but I was extra tired and woke up around midday.

I missed last night also because there was a chance of bad weather in our area (which didn't pan out) and I was afraid my internet or my power would go off during the session. Anyway, I like "The Cage", even though Pike is rather stiffly played by Jeffrey Hunter. I had the half-monochrome/half-color VHS version way back when, so this episode's restoration has always fascinated me. I used to have a laser disc of the early all-color version, and the color in that version was rather splotchy, especially in the picnic scene. Of course, the current Blu-ray version is impeccable in its visual quality. It's also odd that some material that didn't make it to "The Menagerie" was cut for censorship reasons (I guess). For instance, Vina's comment "I have to wear something, don't I?" is cut out of "The Menagerie", as is much of the picnic scene (references to their children potentially inheriting Vina's "headaches", for example). The Vulcan arc is one of my favorites of ST:ENT, so hopefully I will get to participate in next week's discussion.

Thanks very much for the reply. I look forward to next weekend.

Though the least enthused, I didn’t think I was alone, I thought I put my thoughts in some context, and I did say that I thought we were at one point getting too negative and tried to turn the discussion toward the positives of the episode, sharing more some myself. Additionally, I suggested watching some Season 4 ENT as I hadn’t in a while and asked if we dare do the entire trilogy. I’ll take one decontamination gel rubdown by three Orion Slave Boys by way of apology.

I’ll fetch the green paint!

I actually have no issue with people having negative thoughts or opinions when it comes to shows, at least when it’s a well articulated opinion which yours always is. I mean, last week I really hated the DS9 episode. We all love Trek, so I think it’s a safe zone to criticise some of it.

Folks come join up this evening for a chatty Trek time, this week we will be discussing the following episodes:

ENT - 4x07 - The Forge
ENT - 4x08 - Awakening
ENT - 4x09 - Kir'Shara

Also worth having a look at some sneak peak Picard pictures from the S2 set
