Isn't there anything else they could give you that would be less obnoxious than the wound vac?
Now, I've heard that cat purring is supposed to encourage a healthy body...maybe this will work.

Here's a cat clearly enjoying himself. (And good on the owner for using a pet foster while searching for a pet-friendly apartment rather than giving up his cat.)

In answer to your question, no, there is no alternative. Or rather, the alternative dressing needs to be changed daily, and insurance won't cover the nurse visiting that often. And because of the location, I can't do it myself.

Now why didn't they check everything properly before you sent the vac away? Honestly, I'm beginning to wonder if you should consider seeing a different set of doctors, because the ones you've had have been incompetent to say the least.
What gave you the impression that my docs have been incompetent? I've complained about one doctor's office staff and about the rehab center that I was in back in April.
The incision looked 100% ready to have the vac off, per both surgeon AND visiting nurse (who does not work for said surgeon). There was no way to predict that it was going to stop improving. And the vac company will only let you wait so long before returning it anyway.
Now, I think I'll get me some purr therapy...

Yeah, she's lucky. These pics are actually a combination of scenes from the old house and the retirement community where she lives now. The yard at the old house was fantastic (and backed up onto some nice swampy woods), but the yard where she is now is very nice, too (and backs up on some woods with a cool river down behind).

Oh, okay.
Except it was a nurse at the rehab center who left the old dressing in the wound, and it was too far inside -- like in a tunnel -- for anyone to see. And it was the surgeon who found it, after one of the visiting nurses got suspicious that something was wrong.
Rehab center was decidedly incompetent. Everyone before and after has been wonderful.

You've all been so supportive, I had bring this thread back to mention this:
Neurosurgeon said today that I have an 80 to 85 percent chance of the tumor never recurring.
Recovery is still going slowly, but those stats will help me put up with a lot.

That's very good news. I'm sorry recovery is still going slowly, but things are looking up.
