Zefram Cochran got screwed in "First Contact"

It ssems too much of a stretch to believe that the personality of ZC would change so much between the time he started tp construct the Phoenix and the Warp 5 complex and the ZC we saw in TOS.
Could you reasonably say that the Companion reworked his personality over the years?

Ever watch the "Up" series of films (like "42 Up')? Pretty much demonstrates the idea old jesuit axiom, "Give me a child to the age of seven and I'll show you the man." People's basic personalities are set very young and rarely change much.

Since TOS Cochrane had no personality, where's the problem?

Ooooh... rather cold...
As for Cochrane... over 200 years passed between FC and the TOS ep... We haven't seen people that old, so we don't know the psychological implications...

I would think being stuck on some barren rock with a gaseous fart for company would make me MORE of a drunken sot :)

Alcohol isn't exactly complicated to make. If The Companion can provide food and heal bodies then it can certainly jam a couple carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms together. Flavoring may be the tricky part, but then it always is.

WE got screwed by being fed a ZC that was not even remotely similar to the one from TOS.

100% agreed.

I hated First Contact.

The whole thing regarding the warp drive ship built inside a missile silo in post apocalyptic America was too much like 1950s era sci-fi stuff where mad scientists built spaceships in their backyards.

Or perhaps more like This

we are told that only stuff on screen is canon. Then the stuff on screen blatantly defiles what went before. This makes for a very loose canon (excuse pun!)
Excuse aside, that warrants 2 points. *grin*

More to the point, how did Cochrame LAND an interballistic missile? I think I'd want the music turned up very loud, just to try that.
And that overlooked (by myself at least) point is deserving of 2 points as well! *grin*

He separated the control capsule from the rest of the ship and deorbited similarly to an early US spacecraft.

^Lily was supposed to be one of the co-pilots. (Her line as she drags Cochrane out of the bar: "I'm not going up in that thing with a drunken pilot!")

Folowing ST canon is a directive given to the authors and editors of the licensed ST tie-ins, to ensure they don't stray too far from the source material.

It's never applied to actual onscreen ST which has often rewritten itself in the eternal quest for each episode/movie being the best standalone stories they can be.

Now, there's an interesting question. I can understand why Lily would agree say she was on the ship as far as history is concerned, but who did they get to claim to be the second co-pilot? The suspiciously vulcanoid bartender?

It would probably be just as easy to keep it between themselves... say that the ECON attack on the missile complex left the second co-pilot dead, so Zef and Lily had to make do without.

I assumed we were talking after Riker and LaForge showed up. The actual pick up crew might have been killed in the new timeline.

I thought 2 and 6 were pretty amusing together. The episode dragged a bit, but on the other hand, Peri was there to drool over. :D
