Zachary Quinto: ‘No Guarantees’ For Another Star Trek Film

They had a big (and likely expensive) opening for the movie in London. I also see articles on British websites in the leadup to the film.

That's one newspaper's own coverage of a celebrity attended premiere, which applies to most blockbusters these days.
But there was no marketing campaign from Paramount itself, no massive add campaigns, no big interviews on chat shows like Into Darkness recieved, as mentioned above. To be honest I can't remember seeing much more than just the trailers, there didn't seem to be any attempt to make it stand out at all.

A premiere lets movie fans know it's out, but it doesn't build up any hype or expectation from a general movie going audience prior to its release.

I think the first two were more... intense, for want of a better description, on the big screen at least. It's something JJ is very good at, at the expense of logic sometimes. Beyond is in many ways the better film, but I think there was something a bit... generic about it if I'm being really critical. I also didn't feel the peril of STID or the freshness of ST09. I still really love the film though and I feel it's still overall as good, just slightly different.

I think you hit on it pretty well. By the end of Beyond, nothing had changed except the "A" painted on the Enterprise hull. At the end of the first film, we're left to ponder the universe without Vulcan and how it will affect our characters. At the end of the second, we have a looming Klingon war, Section 31 and possible Augments to look forward to. At the end of Beyond, we essentially got a reset button.

Basically, any story involving Cardassians could be rewritten with the Klingons or Romulans substituted in, with only minor tweaking.

I agree they are variations on a theme, but then to be fair, so are Nero, Krall, and even Montal-Khan. They all lost everything they hold dear and blame Spock/the Federation/Kirk for it, devote themselves entirely to the pursuit of enacting revenge even at the expense of what they do have and/or those still loyal to them...

Exactly! Wash, Rinse and repeat

I watched that the night before STID was released and up until that point was totally unspoiled. Then they go and show the brig clip... 'I can give you 72' and that just confirmed 100% it was Khan.
yeh you have to be careful with spoilers on that show. in the jokey atmosphere the stars can give away stuff too.
I got royally spoiled for STID just after the Australian? premiere which was a week or two before it went on release everywhere (whyd they do that for such a heavily guarded spoiler fuelled film anyway?) . had managed to be totally in the dark about spoilers who BC was playing/Whos hand was on the glass etc.. Then was on TM.com reading comments about Kirks Generations death (apparently Shatner had been tweeting Ron Moore or the other one about killing him off) and TM did an article about it. Was obviously keeping away from all STID articles everywhere online esp after the Aust permiere as there were obviously people posting spoilers but figured (stupidly) a Generations thread would be fine to read. it was very late should've been asleep but was reading comments moaning about the way Kirk went out etc and then came across some aholes comment 'Kirk also dies at the end of the new film, but is revived by Khans blood'. three huge spoilers in one tiny sentence! before could stop had read and processed it..(I remember that horrible numb feeling you get when you get spoiled big time but this was the biggest ever spoil ive ever had) the comment was deleted the next day therefore verifying it. if only I had just gone to sleep that night! :(

It's standard practice for a film to have it's premiere before general release, but these days its not uncommon for film to have press embargoes, where they're limited as to what they can/can't say about a film's narrative, or even barring them from publishing anything at all until general release.

This is not just a giant spoiler, this is probably one of the dumbest things Star Trek put to screen, ever. I still can't believe the people behind the rebooted Trek thought this was a good idea for the finale of a movie...

This is also pretty much the moment I gave up on Kelvin-timeline Trek. I didn't saw Beyond in cinema, the first Trek movie I skipped since I was ten. I remember there were many trailers and advertisement, but it just looked kind of bland and I was worn out. I catched later at home, and had a good time with it. But I wasn't exactly remorsefull to not have seen it in cinema.

In retrospect it still kind of boggles my mind: Star Trek 09 was such a breath of fresh air, was exciting, action-packed, colorful and entertaining (although a bit shallow). And then both sequels not just took 3-4 years to make (the entirety of the MARVEL Cinematic Universe was realised inbetween those movies!), but also had a massive downgrade in stakes in their stories and looked kind of generic bland grey-ish futuristic (with starbase Yorktown being the sole exception of something visually interesting - while also being mostly grey).

Expect more updates from Paramount as Jim Gianopulos settles into his new job.

WWZ2 hasn't been greenlit just yet but expected to be within a few weeks.

Expect this forum to be abuzz if and when a Trek announcement gets made.

maybe I missed this in the threads, but above is a link that says there is a script.
All that really means is that there was an announcement several months back in which McKay and Payne were named as those who would be writing the script, and that someone has dutifully recorded that information at IMDb.

We don't know at this point whether those two have begun working on it, or whether whatever they do write will ultimately be part of a script which ends up being filmed. Recall that they were also writers on the first script for the last movie — the script which was eventually discarded in favor of one by Pegg and Jung.

I think there will be a 4th Trek film. STB was the highest grossing film for them last year. The only other big franchise IP Paramount has is Transformers. I maintain that STB low gross lies at the fault of marketing. 2016 was Trek's big 50th and your heard nothing about it. My family is filled with Trekkies (I come from a big country family) and none of them knew there was a new Trek film last year. I really feel TPTB at Paramount are still ashamed of Trek and don't really embrace it the way Disney has embraced Star Wars and Marvel for example. Rock out to it, Paramount.

Don't forget Paramount's other big franchise, Mission: Impossible. Agree 100% with everything else.
