Zach Braff Back on Scrubs

Geeze, didn't these people ever hear of After M*A*S*H? Just let this one go guys, Scrubs was great, whatever this is will not be great.

Yeah, I'd say change the name to make it a spin off I can ignore. Let Scrubs end on a high note. If the spin off works well, that can end on a high note too. If it doesn't, no harm no foul.

I'd prefer to let it go. Such a nice ending to the show, don't ruin it by dragging it back out for a few more dollars.

The final season wasn't all that great in the ratings anyway, so how well would it do NOW, after you'll have lost a few of the people just hanging on for the finale?

Samantha Who? was canceled by ABC today!

What the fuck is going on in this world?! Scrubs is back from the dead, Better off Ted is alive, but Sam is dead?

Scrubs had a great finale. I don't see the point in continuing the show. Make it a spin-off, or don't bother at all.

Whats worse is there's talk of it becoming studio show filmed in front of an audience....which is ironic since they had a fantasy episode where they showed how bad it would be if it was that kind of show.

There was a lawsuit that determined that Trapper John M.D. was not a spinoff of the M*A*S*H television series, but rather of the movie.

Yeah, I know....

I've always kind of wanted to watch the show, except for Zack Braff. I just don't like him. He's like Garry Shandling's Chris Pine.

I've made the argument before that Zach Braff's lack of funniness makes everything else seem hilarious ;)

I'm not a regular viewer of the show the way some people are. I've seen a few episodes here & there. It's funny in small doses but all the J.D./Elliott angst really turned me off. It's just not that clever and I don't understand how it has lasted this long in the first place. But even that said, I cannot possibly fathom how the show will work without J.D.

Turns out Scrubs season 9 will be a spinoff without a name change.
I'm curious to hear your take on the whole Scrubs renewal. The "series finale" was so wonderfully sweet and sappy, how can they come back from something so final? --Sydney
Ausiello:
I would have preferred it end right there, but it's hard to argue with Bill Lawrence's justification for continuing. "There are 107 people that work on that show," he reminded me earlier this week. "I've worked with them for eight years now. If there's a chance for everybody to work another year, my attitude, business-wise, is 'legacy-schmegacy.' I couldn't give a f--k, to tell you the truth. I thought the first eight years of Scrubs was great. I'm super proud of it. There's absolutely nothing that could possibly happen that could change that... On the creative side, some people are like, 'It should end on a high note creatively. It shouldn't be something that taints our memory.' And I get that. [But the other] 50 percent of the people are like, 'Oh my god, I'm so glad to have a show back that I care about.' The way to bridge that gap is I've got to consider Scrubs over. The way that I'm viewing it is the way Frasier was to Cheers: It'll be essentially a new show with some characters that people liked."
Question: What will the ninth season of Scrubs look like? Will Sarah Chalke be taking over JD's duties? --Tony
Ausiello:
Probably not, considering Chalke isn't looking to return full time, per Bill Lawrence. "I would've had Sarah in a heartbeat," he says. "I think she's got enough going on in her career [right now]. I'd say it's 50-50 she's in some episodes. I know she'll at least be in one or two." My guess? In light of the fact that ABC passed on Donald Faison's comedy pilot, The Law, Lawrence will go with the "Turk teaching at med school" premise he's been kicking around. Whatever idea he ultimately goes with, "The one promise I would make to people is that if this does suck, it won't suck in a lame fizzle-out kind of way," he says. "It will suck in a huge way. It will really, really suck." If I've said it once, I've said it a million times: Few things in life are as entertaining as interviewing Bill Lawrence.

Okay, I trust Bill Lawrence. That interview was hilarious... and I know I'll probably watch because I'm a completist!

It's either going to be good, or it's going to really REALLY suck!

At least he is honest. Plus he realizes that he can't change the name, but he can change the show, and he seems to be staying on the show, so at least the creator is still there.

"Scrubs", after perhaps only M*A*S*H*, is the greatest comedy show of my lifetime. I know that's a crazy think to write with all the other greats of the past 30 years, but, for me, it struck the perfect balance between comedy and drama. The cast was perfect from top to bottom--I mean is there another show with as many memorable characters (both leads and supporting)? The writers took a page right out of Shakespeare--even characters with small parts can be memorable if well written. Ted might just be the funniest guy on the whole show and he only get a few lines per episode.

Anyway, while the news of the show returning for a 9th season makes me very nervous, if Bill Lawrence is still running the show I will check it out. He has earned at least that much.

Seems like a reasonable approach. BL has entertained us well for 8 seasons, why not give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he can do? If it sucks, it sucks, and as viewers we'll move on to something else. But what if he strikes gold? History shows he probably won't but at least we can give it a chance before dismissing it IMHO.

Another update from Ausiello:

Scrubs boss Bill Lawrence said his cancellation-defying comedy would undergo an extreme makeover in its ninth season, and, man, he wasn't kidding. When the show returns next winter, the action will shift from the hospital to the classroom and make med-school professors of John C. McGinley's Dr. Cox and Donald Faison's Turk.

Pretty much a complete sea change, it seems.
