What's Paul McGann doing? You could have a accident and The Doctor goes backwards to a earlier regeneration. This could buy some time since we are coming up on the 10th Doctor and he only has 13(?) lives.

^Or, you could do a story in the Doctor's past. The 10th Doctor meets a new companion that he immediately recognizes. He arranges for her to be "accidentally" left behind where he remembers that the 8th Doctor met her. She then has a series of adventures with the 8th Doctor. You could probably only keep that going for about 1 season or so but I think it would be interesting. It would be a way to give McGann a fair shot at playing the Doctor. It would also allow the writers to show us Gallifrey & the other Time Lords, since they are still around at this point in the time line. We could even see the beginnings of the Time War.

If the episode is called "Alien Invasion Of London Where Boris Johnson Gets Blowed Up With Space Bombs And His Floppy Hair Is Found Floating Forlornly In The Thames" then I think he should be on the show.
