Your personal GOTY Award.

So now that pretty much every big title with the exception of Left 4 Dead and Prince of Persia is out, what was your personal GOTY (game of the year award)?

Which game (In your opinion) lived up to the hype, failed miserably or far surpassed it?

Gears 2 pretty much lived up to it's hype and I had a great time with it.

COD5 I've played very little of but I enjoyed what I have played.

Fallout 3 has some problems but I'm having a great time with it as well.
It wins my time sucking and longevity award..

But my all time favorite 2008 game goes to......drum roll.....

You guessed it.

Dead Space.

Not gonna get into why because we spent a great amount of time in this tread discussing it.

But to answer my thread a few months back, I found my perfect video game. :techman:

So what is your personal GOTY?

I'm trying to think back to the games I played after COD4 and none are really sticking out in my mind. I haven't played COD5 and Resistance 2 enough to give a fair assessment of them.

I guess if I had to pick a game, I'd go with Saints Row 2.

Does COD4 count? If so, I rate it before COD5 simply because it was first-and the 21days of play time I put in stand as a ludicrous statement about my personal addiction to it. If not, the COD5-which I'm having a blast with.

Valkyria Chronicles, by a country mile.

I quote from Tycho at Penny Arcade: (yeah, there are two of my MSN friends here who have already had this shoved up their noses. Tough :D )

Valkyria Chronicles is very, very simply one of the best games this year. We've been starved for a worthy tactical experience on the next-gen consoles, waiting for the install bases on this equipment to reach the point where more subtle maneuvers make sense. This game practically defines the Playstation 3 hardware for me, now: you don't get the sense that it's part of some calculated portfolio, engineered to snare elusive demographics. It's just classic from the moment you pick up the controller, with strategy gameplay that feels modern without being compromised for a general audience. I've already recommended the demo, and I'll do so again - it would be a cataclysm if this game doesn't get its due. I could write a thousand words every day for a week on either the design or the art. It's an index of our progress as a species that you can get both on the same disc.

linky :)

Runners-up include:

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (was released in January in PAL territories)
Viking: Battle for Asgard
Braid
SEGA Superstars Tennis
Endless Ocean
Mario Kart Wii

If I had to choose one game, and I kind of hate doing it, well... I think the choice is obvious.

Braid. Quite possibly the most important game of 2008 and proof that you can tell a story through platforming and more importantly, without guns.

I'm not sure. I would imagine that if I went from an hours played standpoint then Super Smash Brothers Brawl would have it.

I still haven't played too much Fallout 3 or Call of Duty WaW yet, and my copy of Left 4 Dead is currently on the way from Amazon.

Plus even though I'm not really a big fan turn based RPGs I'm really looking forward to playing Chrono Trigger again without the horrible load times of the PSX version. I don't really want to give a SNES port the GotY though.

There are also a couple of games that came out this year that I never got a chance to play but really want to, like Tales of Vesperia (and Tales of Symphonia 2, though from what I've read it's not really GotY material).

Currently, I'd say Dead Space, but I'll have to wait til I've played Gears 2 and Resistance 2 before I made a proper decision.

Runners-Up:
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Call of Duty: World at War

I've still got Dead Space, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Left 4 Dead, and Gears of War 2 to play before I can really make a decision (money and time holding me back) but right now the award very easily goes to GTA4 with Super Smash Bros. Brawl in second place.

I'm going to guess that the people nominating Dead Space aren't basing that nomination on the PC version.

Who plays games on the PC anymore? :wtf:

Me for a start. If I'm going to play a long involved game then it's PC all the way for me.

It's a shame that EA Redwood Shores didn't take the expectations of PC owners in to account when they laid out the controls for the PC version. Just try reacting to something that's sneaked up behind you.

It's not the first time a EA published game has done this - EA published the PC version of Mass Effect. The PC controls for that don't really work either.
