Your opinion of 'fan fiction"?

Most of it is pretty bad, though once in a while you find a rare gem that's very enjoyable to read. But in the end, the only people who should decide what becomes canon are the people paid millions upon millions of dollars to make a winning decision.

I think most of it is just OK, but I've read some real gems. Some are even better than most of the canon stuff. What I don't like about fan fiction is the extremely large amount of romance. I don't watch Trek, or any other TV show for that matter, mainly because of couples. Couldn't there be a romance subplot instead?

The few fics I've written (and fewer finished) have always been just for fun. I'm not a writer, and i don't profess to be any good, but it's fun to do as a hobby.

Having written professionally, I have two things to say about Star Trek fan fiction:

1- "Opinions are like belly buttons; some are in, some are out, but everybody has one." -Me [AKA: Different strokes for different folks]

2- "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Also reading the Tessaract stories which is really fun.

Just stumbled across this comment and it absolutely made my night. Thanks, Milo. :D

To stay on topic, I'll say that I think fanfic writers have the advantage in that we are limited only by our own imaginations and skill -- not budgets and physical realities. It's a hell of a lot easier to write a decent fanfic story than it is to write a good script, secure decent actors and come up with convincing special effects. I have a lot of respect for the fanfilm producers -- it's an uphill battle they are fighting, and one they are definitely doing for love of the universe and the material. I may not love everything they produce, but I can see the passion that went into it, and I respect it greatly.
