I have a fantastic story:
Today I went shopping for a cooking lesson tomorrow (when I say cooking I mean putting snacks together, but they're second graders and are thrilled to think they are actually cooking). We are studying birds so the treat is made all of things that birds might eat: dates stuffed with sunflower seeds, raisins, nuts, and rolled in honey and coconut.
I've done this lesson with 4 classes so far, and I'm doing it with my last two classes tomorrow. We start by making a Venn Diagram showing things that birds eat and that people eat. But while we had quite an easy time thinking of things that birds eat (worms, cockroaches, mice), and an easy time thinking of things both birds and people eat (bread, rice, seeds, nuts), we had a little trouble coming up with things that only people would eat. While there are plenty of things that most birds won't eat, like hot dogs and egg and cheese sandwiches, there are always crows to make an exception. My first three classes were stumped, and admittedly, so was I -- crows eat anything! Finally, in my last class of the day, Mikey, dear, sweet, clever Mikey, raised his hand, "I know it! I know it!" he said. "I know something that people eat that birds don't eat: BOOGERS!" We all about died laughing as I wrote it on the blackboard.
As to the hats, you do know that once you get rid of that fedora you will find the perfect coat to match it and will thus be very, very sad? These are things you must remember!
I got my green felted cloche a while back, and it's gorgeous: deep, emerald green with an asymmetrical ripple in the felting, and a huge green and black bejeweled and feathered flower on the side. It's just shy of a church hat, but shy enough not to be ridiculous, especially when worn with a nice pair of jeans and a fitted black jacket. Sometimes you just want to make some noise, you know?
I've been wanting to post it, but the emerald is so deep that it keeps turning up black in the photos. I need a friend to take a picture of me wearing it outside on a sunny day.
The other hat, the silk cloche, is going to be awhile. The milliner who's making it had an accident in Germany and is still recovering. But I'm really looking forward to that one!
And lastly, what with summer just around the corner, the milliner who made the green felted cloche is experimenting with straw cloches with linen flowers. I can't wait to see them!
