Your favourite Starfleet uniform?

LeeDrawsStuff

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
I've been drawing a bunch of Captain/Admiral Kirk sketch cards in all the different uniforms and started having a chat on Twitter about which uniform is best so I thought I'd ask over here too.

To kick off I'm TOS film series red jacket kind of guy!

I like the TOS film "Monster Maroons", too - They're distinctive and unlike any of the other Trek Uniforms. Plus, I like how intricate some of the details are, and how many details there are! They have inspired many a future Trek uniform sketch from me.
However, when I really think about it, they're a tad too much like military uniforms for my tastes (and I know that one of Starfleet's purposes is serving as a military, or in a military capacity - a topic covered in a different thread), so my favourite Trek uniform is the 2350s "The Cage" version. It looks comfortable, practical and I like the subdued simplicity.

I was just thinking this myself though about the Where No Man Has Gone Before uniforms - the neck line looks kind of like what a sailor might wear - if that makes sense

I liked the black/gray FC uniforms the best. They're the most subtle.

I liked the maroon ones too, but they look too much like dress uniforms. These looked 1,000,000x better with the turtleneck underneath.

As far as TOS style uniforms, the ST-Beyond ones are pretty nice looking (the colored ones with the short collar).

I like the idea of the Monster Maroons (with turtleneck) as dress uniforms, and the DS9 uniforms for duty. Only I'd like to see division colors for the whole jackets on the Monsters, and I'd swap gold back as command/ops and red back to engineering/security. (I also added a sword to the dress uniform. ;) )

I like the ones from The Cage and Where No Man Has Gone Before. They're simple, comfortable, functional. I also like the field jackets that we saw in The Cage as a nice addition to the standard uniform. After that, I'd have to say that I like the First Contact duty uniforms next, followed by TNG's Season 3-6.

The TOS uniforms always struck me as amateurish. And although the Abrams' remakes were highly professional -- and had lots of nostalgic value that tickled my inner Trekkie -- they just felt too casual, more like sports apparel than a uniform.

I'm pretty neutral about the maroon movie-era uniforms, and the Enterprise jumpsuits -- except on Captain Hernandez :adore: -- the Beyond TOS adaptations, and most other designs.

And my only genuine dislikes are the duty TMP pajama suits, early-TNG spandex tunics (although I did like the skants), far-future uniforms like we see in All Good Things and Endgame, and the Kelvin universe grays.

And two passionate dislikes are the the maroon movie uniforms without the turtleneck -- and especially with TNG's combadge (like Jack Crusher wore) -- and the DS9/Voyager jumpsuits. Those were awful, especially their appearance in Generations.

I'd usually day the late TNG era as I quite liked the neutral, darker colours and undershirt combo. It was also quite nice to get extra detailing, not just in the shoulders, but the cuffs and such. Little details make all the difference - and it looked good in both the jumpsuit and two-piece forms.

However.... I honestly think the Beyond style has topped it....

^ Spoiler tagged it so save a big bulky space, but.... it's elegant, comfortable and simple with just the right amount of detailing so as not to be overboard.

Huge improvement on the original version and feels like a semi-formal shirt. Absolutely perfect update fifty years on.

First Contact style and movies 2-6 are shared place, after that Enterprise.
I also loved some of the uniforms from TMP.

- I know what you mean. That collar/neckline (in fact, the whole uniform) reminds me of old naval films.

- Yes, the Monsters are very dressy. Too formal for everyday/normal duty use. I remember seeing a 'shopped image of the Enterprise crew from ST VI but with TOS colours - the uniforms looked pretty good, but I prefer the maroon. Although a sword would make anything look awesome!

I've always thought these look cool.
- Oh gods, yes! I'd forgotten about these flightsuit types.

- That top looks great on your mannequin (and on the cast), but the reboot uniforms remind me of football kits...

Oddly, I like them partly for that reason. It's one of the few times where the officers have a 'show off' uniform, while everyone who does the dirty work or heavy lifting gets their jumpsuit. It's not something seen anywhere else in Trek, but I do like the clear delineation and how that comes together in fancy space clothes.

I don't watch football, so I've never really clicked on that comparison. That said.... when I properly got a look at the new ones, the 2009/ID shipboard uniforms suddenly looked very sporty, especially with the type of fabric and print used. Now we have a plain and formal style... the previous batch annoy me :/

In that vein, I liked the Yesterday's Enterprise versions with the higher , solid collar and the cuff embelishments. Plus the phaser sash.

Count me in for The Cage. I prefer them over the Where No Man Has Gone Before version becasue the male collar is convex rather than concave. The concave version just looks worn out, like they stretched the collar to much. Though nothing beats the mini-dresses of Kirk's era.

I'm also going to shout out the TMP uniforms. While they aren't my favorite, I think they look pretty good. I like the clean lines and muted colors.

Red TOS movies, those or DS9/FC ones actually seem to represent authority to me, the others less so
