Okay, old school. Paint it yellow and make it out of wood. When I use the ring to fire a BB or moderately-sized asteroid (which ever is appropriate) at a significant fraction of c at it, you'll have a lot of yellow wooden bits to pick up.

The Stargate. Yeah, wormholes used for travel are old hat in SF, particularly SF lit and usually for spacecraft, but the Stargate SG-1 stargate was a cool idea as an interstellar transit network. And it made space adventure seem fresh again without the usual reliance on starships...although they had those too.
