Your favourite radio stations?

I'm an XM/Sirius subscriber so I listen to ZERO Atlanta radio (and no commercials, political pimpages, etc). However, my favorite stations on XM are:

40's on 4 - 1940's/big band music
60's on 6 - 1960's music
80's on 8 - 1980's music
90's on 9 - 1990's music

The Blend - mix of current and classic hits
The Pulse - sort of current general hits (from pop to alternative)
Lithium - grunge & 90's alternative
E Street Radio - All Springsteen, all the time
Siriusly Sinatra - Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack pals
Symphony Hall - classical music

Met Opera Radio - Opera
XM Public Radio
NPR Now
Radio Classics - classic radio shows

The bolded ones are where I spend the most time.

In the car, I tend to listen to Jack FM - no DJs (apart from on the morning show) and a nice mix of music without too much from today's charts.

EDIT - I see Daneel upthread listens to the same station (well, owned by the same parent company anyway).

Indeed -- the one I listen to never used to have any DJs, but a couple of years ago they added a morning show... and now they have DJs for all times of the day. I admit, it took me a while to get used to it; part of what I liked about the station was the more music/no DJs format -- which they seemed very proud of in their advertisements. But I'm okay with it now. The DJs' personalities are tolerable, and they don't take up too much airtime -- plus they still play a pretty good selection of music (mostly classic stuff, with a lesser amount of contemporary songs).

You know, I pretty much stick with 88.5 KPLU (Seattle/Tacoma) these days -- one of the best jazz/blues stations in the world, according to lots of folks, and available to all at kplu.org. But this question got me thinking about other favorite radio stations over the years...

I still remember being a teenager in St. Louis and "graduating" from Top 40 KXOK-AM (630 on your dial with Mason Lee Dixon) and KSLQ-FM 98 to AOR stations KADI-FM (which played "The Original Oldies Show" with Gary "Records" Brown on Sunday nights) and the king of the St Louis rock stations, KSHE 95 "Real Rock Radio." I took a semester off from college at one point and ended up working the graveyard shift at a 7-11 just down the street from the KSHE studio. Got to know several of the jocks who'd stop in to fuel up on their way in to work or on their way home.

Honorable mention to Louisville's 91.9 WFPK, where Rick Forest's "Jazz, etc" furthered my musical education and introduced me to one of the funniest comedy routines of all time, Flip Wilson's riff on Christopher Columbus. :guffaw:

Well I hope my local incarnation doesn't add too many DJs... having said that, the morning ones are OK.

Jack FM in LA runs the funniest commercials. "Don't bother calling in your requests-we're Jack FM and we just don't care.":rommie:

Back in Phx, it was 97.9 KUPD. The Red Rockin' Radio Show with Dave Pratt.:techman: Alas, The Mayor has retired....:(

BBC Radio 4: news, comedy and drama all on one station (and, since Eddie Mair took over PM, news and comedy in one programme: it's like the Daily Show if it actually did serious reporting as well).
It's not perfect (if I hear one more Afternoon Play about 'How I got over my divorce/child's death/whatever thanks to the nice guy who turned out to be dying' I will... shout at my radio again!), but it's as close as you could hope to get.

I think Nicky Campbell serves that purpose just as well on Five Live. :guffaw:

Nicky Campbell? Didn't Don't Watch That, Watch This, put it all together and prove he was the first sign of Satan's arrival on Earth?

Fo' truth! :bolian:

Plus he used to host Wheel of Fortune. :scream:

I have to give respect to Eddie Mair - yes he can make me chuckle at times, but more than that, his questioning is absolutely forensic and often makes interviewees' gaps in logic show up clearly. I usually try to leave work a bit early, to be honest, but if not, I often tune into PM on Radio 4 on the drive back because he's very good at the job.

I had a classic "shit, when did I get old moment?" today - pretty young colleague tells me about the song she was listening to on Radio 1. Not only did I have no idea who the artist was, I also mentioned I was listening to Radio 4 at the time and got a pretty classic "Radio FOUR??!! Really??!!" look right back.

Up to then, I think I was managing to seem moderately cool...

I did get revenge a little later by pointing out exactly where she'd need botox soon. :D

But Radio 4 are great, though! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_4_(band)
I think you're in. Giggity-giggity indeed. :bolian:

I listen to bits and pieces off the web feeds for BBC Radio 4, Radio 1 and a show off of Radio 6.

In the car it's MP3 disks or iPod and now that I take the bus it's all iPod, same with at my desk. I hate the personalities on the local stations and generally commercial radio annoys me too much with all the cutesy crap and the ads.

KHYL 101.1 FM -- "V101.1 - The R&B and Old School station"

and

KYMX 96.1 FM -- "Soft rock, Mix 96" (They also switch to Christmas music during December)

If you like Love Songs you should listen to 93.7 it is great. Soft rock is good also, but I prefer Love music I am big on romance.
