Your Favorite "Box-Office Flops"

The Blues Brothers is always worth watching, but didn't do that well originally.

IMDb lists it as number ten for the year, domestic box office. Top ten is usually considered successful, though you may have higher standards!

What's a good website for finding any movie's box office take?

I tried IMDB for one I figure was an epic flop, but it didn't have any info in that area.

I had tried both of those, Evil Alien Conquerors isn't listed on boxofficemojo & only little info on wiki.

Must have been a historical flop to not even be listed

But hey, at least there was a DVD for me to buy.

I really liked John Carter when I finally saw it on cable a few months back. The reviews kept me from the theater but now I wished I had seen it on the big screen.

John Carter was really good. Most of the movie's problems were in promoting it. And who came up with the name? Without the word "Mars" in the title somewhere, only hard-core sci-fi aficionados would associate it with Burroughs. "John Carter" sounds like a movie about your congressman.

I blame Mars Needs Moms.

I wonder how many people thought that John Carter was about Noah Wylie's character from ER?

Looked up "Evil Alien Conquerors" on IMDB, it sounds pretty freaking great. :)

It's one of many many cheesy and/or stupid movies in my DVD collection.

Croker is the best part. He was basically a giant on his own world, then when he was transported to Earth he became normal sized, but keeps rating on about how huge he is and how he will crush the others under his mighty foot.

It seems the movie "Need For Speed" that's in theaters now may be flopping in the US. Which is a damned shame, because it's a great action flick. Best car sequiences for many a years, way better than anything Fast & The Furious has ever churned out, and it's actually filmed FOR REAL most of the time. So yeah, it's on my list probably since most likely is going to be remembered as a bomb.

Good idea for a topic, BigJake. My list most assuredly contains some of the movies you've mentioned, so here it is:

Serenity
The Big Lebowski
Idiocracy (which was SCARILY accurate)
Cloud Atlas
Office Space
Blade Runner
Waterworld
Dragonfly
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Mars Needs Moms
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Meet Joe Black

The Terminal
It's A Wonderful Life
Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Nice list, sir! :techman:

Mine would have:

The X-Files: I Want to Believe -- It wasn't a perfect movie, but it's not as bad as others thought it was imo. Well worth seeing in theaters and at home.
Donnie Darko
Robin Hood: Men in Tights -- Same as Meet Joe Black.
Titan: AE -- Really enjoyed this one and never understood why it didn't do good in theatres.
Meet Joe Black -- Love this one and could watch it over and over again.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Just wanted add my :techman: to Titan: AE. I thought that was really good.

Dragonfly

I've hardly ever met anyone who has seen Dragonfly. My wife and I saw it in the theater. I was crying so hard at the end my glasses fogged up!

Great film, completely overlooked for some reason.

Some of the films I like that either flopped outright or underperformed on their initial theatrical release:

Blade Runner (1982)
The Thing (1982)
Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
The Rocketeer (1991)
Last Action Hero (1993)
The Shadow (1994)
The Iron Giant (1999)
Speed Racer (2008)
Watchmen (2009)
Sucker Punch (2011)
John Carter (2012)
Ender's Game (2013)

I just noticed another one of my favorite DVD's was a flop.

U.H.F.

It only made a million more than it cost to make.
