Your design process?

Yeah, I'd love to tour a submarine, strangely enough, there are none in the state of Florida that I can find. I did spend 7 years as a crew member aboard cruise ships. As the IT manager on board I had access to basically all parts of the ship, though I never went to places like the engine room except as part of safety training.

I haven't done any star trek related designs in a while, sort of burned out on them. I'm currently working on a non-trek ship. Heavily influenced by my current fascination with submarines. If I get it to a point of being half way presentable I'll post some images in the "what have you been working on thread", but it may not be for a while. Just sort of going slow on it and only working on it when the mood hits me.

Take a trip to the West Coast. Here in Portland, at OMSI, we have a 1950's era diesel sub, the Blueback I've toured it several times. It's pretty inspiring. I have a print of several of the internal sections which is pretty great when I'm trying to imagine the crowded interior of a plausible spacecraft. I know there are at least a few more subs you can tour, at least one or two in Washington and there has to be some in California. I'm super surprised there isn't one in Florida. There's gotta be one farther north from you.

Definitely worth it to check out.

There's the USS Drum (SS-228) at the USS Alabama in Mobile, that's almost in Florida, so it shouldn't be too far for you. Plus the Alabama herself is pretty cool to see. Since it's a self-guided tour, you can spend as much time in any area as you want, and a large portion of the ship is open to you.

Alabama is an 8 hour drive. It takes forever to get out of Florida.
