Oh, my god... I have gotten a few of these now and let me tell you it hurts. I don't know these people from Adam and they come at me with some of the most vile and thoughtless comments. I understand you can't please all of the people, and you will always get people who think their personal Trek shows were the best and everything else sucks. But this "All trek sucks and you're a Loser just like it" comments really get to me. I would like to know how other people handle this...

I have never heard of anyone who has made a fan film making the transition to being a working professional in the industry. Even the guys over at the Star Trek fan films, who these days work with some of the original ST actors on their fan films, have said making fan films will not help you get a real job in the indusrty.

But as for your question, I always remember that this is simply a message board, and people that say hurtful things often overlook one fact: Their comments say more about them than they do about you.

Remember, it's a mooning contest. We just have to ignore the asses that don't smell right. Or give them a swift kick, if that's your thing. :D

Let it slide and laugh it off. we found out that, as much as we love to visit them, Message boards (all of them, not just one or the other) make up an extremely small percentage of viewership. Most people watch a webisode and move on. But others may write a thesis on one small part of a show. Its not just fan films. profesional productions get the same thing. The only difference is, people responsible for fan films are easier to reach and many times fan productions make decisions based on what a small very vocal group write and post in places like this. There is a certain amount of empowerment doing so.
During the run of 'Enterprise' some cast members got caught up in the negative coments from message boards. Even when things were going ok it was reflected online in a negative light.
People come here many times to argue. Certainly the idea of star trek (to get along) does not happen very often. I never have beat up on another production or publication whether its profesional or amature. hundreds of Hours of hard work and dedication go into making a product. Other people may be able to justify doing it, but I cant stand in judgment of anothers sweat and hard work. Goofs, bad dialog, not so perfect effects and so on just make things fun to watch.
When the day is over as long as I know my kids are proud of me and I have done right, to the best of my ability, to the people I touch everything else does not matter (IDIC)

Let it slide :)

Screw 'em.
It's just something you have to endure if you put your ideas out in public.
That's why I keep my ideas to myself.

At first it upsets you, and then it angers you. Finally you just learn to take a leaf out of Rick Berman's book and ignore them.

Don't let it get to you.

A decent human being would provide you with constructive criticism if they don't like your idea. If they attack you personally, call you names and otherwise react to your creations with anger and hostility, it means that they are suffering from mental and emotional problems; they are attempting to generate an illusion of self-esteem at your expense. Pity them and recommend professional help, then move on.

Then let me be the first. :)

If it had not been for the skills i learned while doing my first fanfilm I would not have gotten the job I now have in Film/TV production.

It was a dream come true and happened because somebody knew somebody and i was at the righ place at the right time, but had I not known what I learned from fanfilms, it would not have been.

Certanly, no matter what you're doing, experience is experience. Even if no one will hire based on said experience, you're still learning and getting better.

But anyone who says there is money to be made in fanfilms is clearly not informed about the situation at all.

Sadly, such people are usually too far gone to take such advice onboard.

If I might be permitted a question:

People who go to film school have to make "student films". These films are supposed to demonstrate their mastery of filmmaking techniques, correct? And these student films go on to become part of the filmmaker's portfolio, which in theory helps them get jobs.

Why WOULD a fan film be treated any differently by those evaluating a person for a film job? Either they show that the prospect has the skills or they don't. Is it entirely a matter of the SUBJECT of the film that's so off-putting?

I'd really like to know...

It comes with the teerritory as it were. That's why you need to do a project that apeals and works for you, that you believe in. Don't worry about what others will think because you'll run the full gamut of responses once you have it out for display:

Some will absolutely love it.

Some could care less regardless.

Some will hate/loathe/despise it, no matter what you do.

So, in the end, make YOUR project that works for you and your crew. Pay no attention to the peanut gallery; that majority of whom have NO CLUE justb what it often takes to pull any sort of fan production off. Those who can, do. Those who can't, critisize.

How do I handle it? Badly. I have never handled unreasoning hatred well, and some of these people (like Our Mad Stalker) are no longer capable of reasoning. They are that badly sunk in their psychosis NOTHING you say or do will change their minds. Something about you, your production, the ISP who hosts your website . . . something is a threat to them, and they will attack as if their very existence is at stake.

The best advice is also the hardest to take: ignore them. Once it is clear that they have more stake in hating what you are than in constructively aiding you in becoming what you could be, ignore them. You and they have nothiing to say to each other, and cannot actually communicate, despite using the same language.

In fact, from your viewpoint, the more insane they sound, the better, because then no sane person will take them seriously. Indeed, I sometimes think that Our Mad Stalker has brought us a tremendous influx of new audience members. Whether it's people thinking "Could something REALLY be this bad? This I've got to see!" or "This guy's nuts! So anything he hates this badly must be worth watching.", you end up with the benefits.

Let's face it: obsessives are tireless, and you could end up with more publicity in more places than if you hired a professional public relations person to promote you. [grin]
