You have survived 10 years without the Prime Universe

Heck, I've spent the past 11 years writing novels set in the Prime Universe. So I sure haven't been without it.

And I've been reading them, and novels written by others. Plus I've watched enough DS9, VOY, and ENT in those years, and finally rewatching TNG now that I have it on Bluray. Plus some movies.

And, dear lord shock and horror how dear he say this...... both the movies made by JJ are as much Star Trek to me as the other stuff.

I mean c'mon, TNG differs from TOS, DS9 differs from TNG, VOY differs.... I can go on for a while, you know? Non of the incarnations are alike. So why should a reboot be EXACTLY like its predecessors?

People are free to think what they want, but I actually think the Prime Universe has gotten more interesting now that it's off television; the novels have given me a new appreciation for the Star Trek universe beyond the TV series, which probably wouldn't be the case if a series were currently airing.

Characterdevelopment was quite lacking on the shows, because it was felt that changing characters to much would alienate fans. And it would have. There's a group out there that can't deal with change. If a person isn't EXACTLY the same in the last episode compared to the first, the show sucked and was horrible.

The novels have dared to have the characters actually change their lives. Marrying, taking new commisions on other ships, have children. All the stuff that happens in real life, you know? And the 24th century has become a far more interesting place for it.

Except that Star Trek isn't real life, so the point is moot. I stand by my wish for the novels to return to their series' respective time frames. TOS is already doing this, that's why it's my current favorite book series. The 24h century series have become unrecognizable.

As for being without the show for ten years, I haven't. own all of them on DVD. I'm on my third re-watch of TOS in ten years right now. And I've re-watched all the others at least three times each also.

i LIVE in the Prime alpha-verse. Right now I'm waiting for a pizza so I can get into some blu-ray TOS while eating, wearing my science TOS bath-robe and........ oh I can hear my phone emitting a VOY-hail sound, my pizza is here! Tonight is a large supreme with a side of City on the Edge of Forever! I haven't watched TOS through since 1997!

Then I'm going to continue organizing my 135km winter walk/trek (cape to cape track) while listening to my favourite mp3 - 1.5 hours of TNG internal engine ambient noise, looped. I'll be completing the walk wearing my QMx Voyager Starfleet communicator badge of course...

Even if there weren't people like me creating new Prime Universe fiction every day, saying that we're "without the Prime Universe" would be as absurd as saying that we're without the Sherlock Holmes canon or Shakespeare or M*A*S*H. Just because something isn't being newly created anymore in an official capacity, that doesn't mean it's gone. Once stories are created, they survive as long as a single copy exists.

This is the comment I was fishing for. This is why the nuTrek hate is so ridiculous to me. Why does anything have to be "official" to be enjoyed? How can fiction be divided into "real" and "doesn't count"?

It doesn't. I enjoy JJ Trek for the latest incarnation or 'flavour' of Star Trek that it is. Just like TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT.

I make my own Prime based materials using miniatures and FASA's rules. Soon we may add Nu-based materials via Axanar to the table top. If we can ever find a way to have minitures crafted inthe right scale.

Do tell. I love the FASA stuff and am always happy to meet a fellow fan.

I loved FASA Trek too.
I also liked it when Last Unicorn had the rights to do Star Trek RPGs. They tried to stick closer to canon than FASA....but FASA was fast and fun.

When I can get my big computers back up and running, I wanna do high quality redos of my CG animated Trek videos (which take place in the TOS movie universe), but I also plan on trying some in the current universe.

Well I've got DS9 S1-7 on DVD to keep going back to in order to see good Trek story telling and character development, so not been without Prime Trek, but rather picking and choosing the best of it.
