While I do see the 'rock' thing people are alluding to, I also don't see any problem just calling them "generic debris" and leaving it at that. 
I mean, the control consoles are made out of something physical, and that matter isn't going to stay in one piece if the console explodes unexpectedly. Obviously if it splinters off into bits it's going to look a little like... uh, the chunks of whatever-it-is we see piercing dead alternative Riker's head in "Yesterday's Enterprise".
