Yesterday

Tim Walker

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
There is a version of speculative fiction in which a character may be catapulted into an alternative timeline. Sometimes the alternative timeline may be very similar to that of the character's origin. The alternative timeline may include individuals that the character knew in the original timeline. But the character will eventually become aware of differences.

As a moderate fan of alternate universe stories and a huge Beatles fan, I loved this movie. I've watched it several times. The soundtrack is fantastic as well. It was just a fun story and the acting was really well done.

As a huge alternate universe and Beatles fan, it was okay, Hardest part was how contemporary music could move in the same direction without the Beatles.
There were a lot of acts that emerged in the 60s that were not influenced by the Beatles--the Beatles were also heavily influenced by other contemporary music and styles. Sure, they wrote a lot of good music and I've been a huge fan since I was a teenager but there is nothing to say that modern music would have been hugely affected without them.

It’s hard to speculate which direction music would have moved in without the Beatles. All of the elements of their music existed in some form, just not necessarily wrapped together in a popular accessible package.

I think we would have gotten to the same place eventually, but the route there would have been much more simplistic and disposable.

The Beatles were part of a synergy that was happening in the 60s. Influenced by and influencing other acts. They also spearheaded the British Invasion. I’m not sure we get the Stones or The Who to America without the Beatles.

Without the Stone and the Who, the Doors probably wouldn't have made it big.

Without the Beatles, pop music would have never gotten trippy and philosophical.

But record companies would have eventually figured out how to put hot people on an autotuner and sing about partying and sex. Pop music in 2021 would be the same, just actual good music would have diverged from popular music much earlier.

It is hard to say, but there was plenty of talent out there that could have filled that void. The Beatles were accessible to America because at the time they were boyish, charming and relatively acceptable by parental gatekeepers. The footage of that original American visit and those two Ed Sullivan shows made them seem like regular lads who could date American daughters and be friends with American boys. You're right in that Mick and the gang might not have given that package in the same charming way. The Beatles were a gateway drug. Would we have had Ed Shereen? Probably not, but he was willing to do the film.

It's been awhile since I've seen the movie but didn't cigarettes and Coke (or maybe Pepsi) also disappear in the world he woke up in? I remember being more interested in that than the Beatles stuff.

There were some random things if I remember correctly. This movie was a lot of fun, but admittedly I would have liked the story to focus a bit more on the alternate reality.

I think some missed the point of the story if they're judging it on the merits of how the universe would really unfold without the Beatles.

This wasn't a hard sci-fi movie and didn't pretend to be.

Though it's fun to speculate and discuss.

I loved Yesterday, as it set up a too-familiar alternate timeline plot and then did something unexpected at the climax.

It did let the protagonist off a bit easily. And a shame that the talk show appearance was cut.

This film really annoyed me. The crux of a What if? story is that the new universe must be manifestly different. This film wants us to accept that the Beatles are amazing and the world would be a lesser place without them, but the Beatleless world is no different! I appreciate it's supposed to be light and fluffy and isn't supposed to be drilled into but there was so much potential here!

And don't get me started on the lead's rise to stardom. It isn't just about the music, it's about four handsome lads from Liverpool appearing at just the right time, to imagine a geeky looking guy in 2021 could get superstardom stretches credulity to breaking point.

The original concept, that the hero gets moderately successful off the back of the Beatles makes more sense, but then Curtis got his hands on it and changed it (and by all accounts stiffed the original scriptwriter into the bargain).
