I live in a city where there they want to build a new arena for our major league sports franchise to replace the rapidly degrading old one.
Not right now, but eventually, it may come to the point where it's a choice between "new arena" or "no team".
The people in my city are supposedly crazy about our team, but all I ever hear from in the papers or from people I talk to is "not with my tax dollars". It's our only truly major professional sports team.
I don't get it. Are people crazy? For the enjoyment that I (and hundreds of thousands) get from having our team in the city, yes, I think it's worth a few of our tax dollars.
Not only that, but the team reaps economic benefits and helps put us on the map. When you consider what the team does to raise the city's profile, I find it bewildering that people would actually be against it, even those who don't like sports.
