Yahoo Headline Spoils Fantastic Four Death

For those of you who don't want to be spoiled on which member of the Fantastic Four dies, do NOT read Yahoo. It was a goddamn front page headline on which member dies. Thanks a lot Yahoo

Some of us are actually reading Fantastic Four every month, and some of that number are even paying cash for that experience still.

Doom need help from a little girl is priceless. :)

Couldn't the headline AT LEAST just say one of the FF dies and you have to click to find out who, versus saying who it was in the damn headline? Yeesh. They'd been advertising someone would die for months, and the storyline is called "Three", so we all knew one of them would die but the mystery was who. They were going to polybag the issue to avoid spoiling anyone!

Except that Marvel went and spoiled it themselves with a press release this morning so they could make the morning news cycle. It's not exactly Yahoo!'s fault that they spoiled the story.

A fair point, of course, so I apologize for the glib "So what?" part of my previous post. I suppose I look at it very differently; even when I was purchasing superhero comics, I didn't care at all when a death like this (or some other major event, as in Spider-Man's unmasking in Civil War, as you mentioned) was "spoiled" for me because I knew it wouldn't last.

Exactly, News agencies get a press release with what to report.

Just went to Yahoo and didn't see the story. Guess they took it down.

Same here. They either did that or the story wasn't there in the first place. I feel dirty for looking on Yahoo news for it.

So what? It's not like the character will stay dead.

I read the article and I heard the writer or editor's bs about how it was the natural progression for the character and it ultimately services the book. I don't care. This reeks of spectacle and a money grab.

"Oh, we're killing off one of the oldest silver age heroes. Look at us, come read!"

And in a few years (probably much less), they'll market the return of said character in some big way. It's the unfortunate never ending cycle of comics. I actually reminds me of this time a few years, just when I was getting out of comics, Reed and Sue split from the group and brought in Storm and Black Panther because Reginald Hudlin was given free reign over Marvel's black population whether creative decisions made sense or not.

From what I can tell Reed and Sue came back very quickly. It's these random events that preach change simply for the sake of change (and money of course) that got me out of comics in the first place. Just tell me a good story, I don't need all of this spectacle.

Didn't we know about the Death of Superman & of Capt. America before the actual comics hit the stands as way just to get folks interested?

I give it exactly one year.

Fantastic Four #588 will be followed by FF #1. The twelfth issue of FF would correspond to Fantastic Four #600, so I'd expect that Marvel, not wanting to miss out on an anniversary issue, would rename and renumber the series in FF #12/Fantastic Four #600. Which would be the perfect time to resurrect the character from his dirt nap. :)

^^^
I'm as over the #1 gimmick as I am the death gimmick.

Just tell some good stories and market those appropriately.

IIRC, the death of Captain America came as a surprise. which is fairly unique in this day and age. after the issue came out there was some media interest.
