Yahoo artice about the series

I strongly agree with the points on being serialized and bringing in some of the "old guard" talent. I don't really care which timeline it's set in, but I do believe this show ought to have season-long/series-long arcs -- several of them at any given time -- against a backdrop of TOS/TNG-era exploration of stars and themes.

1. Head Back to Prime Time(line)
I don't know that I'd be interested in a series that goes back to the Prime universe. An Abramsverse or completely new series would be more up my alley.

2. New Ship, New Crew
I think that's a given based on what the press release says.

3. But Bring Aboard Some Familiar Behind the Scenes Talent
Eh? How about a fresh take on an old idea? I don't think that's a bad thing. Star Trek is about looking forward. The production can and should take that stance as well.

4. See What the Fans Are Up To
A big HELL NO. The last thing I want is one small group of fans opinion on what Star Trek should be. Roddenberry said once if he did what the fans wanted, Star Trek would be terrible. I agree. What I want is different than what you want than is different from what he or she wants. I trust the creative talent behind the series to do what the majority of Star Trek fans need in a new series.

5. Get Your Serial On
Yes. Please. Thank you.

1) The Prime Timeline - I get the longing for the Prime Timeline, I get the nostalgia. The problem, I see with setting a new series within the scope of the prime timeline, well, is the same problem JJ faced, is that, with some 524 hours of produced Trek, you have a very well fleshed out universe, that was based on how we saw the future in the 1960s. By going back to he prime timeline, your handcuffing yourself to a continuity, that you don't need to. I don't know that the Timeline presented in the JJ films is necessarily the right timeline either maybe some hybrid timeline, but Keep it simple....

2) New Ship, New Crew - This one I have a hard time with. To me Star Trek is the Enterprise. I can get past the crew, But I can't imagine another ship.

3) Bring back aboard some familiar behind the scenes talent - This one I am mixed about. I don't want to see a rehash of 90's trek designs. LCARS was cool when touch panels were just off in the the distance, but now we are past touch screens, and looking at what the next interface will be. That Said, RDM would be an asset to any new production but, I would limit the "familiar behind the scenes talent" to those responsible from a story perspective.

4) See what the fans are up to - No... just no...

5) Get your Serial on - I think this is a given. Episodic TV has gone the way of the dinosaurs, especially when it comes to dramas. What happens in episode 1 should have ramifications for Epsiode 2, 3, 4 and so on. If the ship is damaged in one episode, it should carry over through subsequent episodes as we see repair efforts and such.. So in this way we an serialize the story telling, while still maintaining the ability to tell the occasional stand alone story.

2) New Ship, New Crew - This one I have a hard time with. To me Star Trek is the Enterprise. I can get past the crew, But I can't imagine another ship.

They've done 14 seasons of Star Trek that have nothing to do with the Enterprise

And each successive season suffered from diminishing returns....

Disagree so hard if we're talking creatively and DS9. Regardless, silly to say you can't imagine Trek without an Enterprise, because there has been a ton of it

We aren't talking Creativity... we are talking viewers, and what this show needs to be, to carry a Streaming service with a cost of $6.00 per month....

Since when? I thought we were talking about a Yahoo article about 5 things we want to see from the new Star Trek show?

The article is about what the show needs to do to be successful...

Is it? Where? It's literally titled "Five Things We Want To See In the New Star Trek Series.

"Having only just absorbed the news, here are the five things we most want to see from the return of Star Trek. Make it so, CBS…"

If this new series can reimagine Star Trek the way that Battlestar Galactica was reimagined, I think it would be a *great* idea. NuBSG took a lot of risks, even switching around the genders and races of some of their main characters -- they got criticized for it at first, but the show ended really well with a lot of excellent reviews.

IMO the problem with Star Trek ever since TNG, possibly the TOS movie time frame as well, is that they never took major risks. Yar was the only character who died and stayed dead, for example (and even then they found ways to bring Denise Crosby back.)

Imagine TNG, for example, if Picard/Locutus had remained assimilated. TOS movies if Spock had stayed dead. DS9 if even the Dax symbiant died and there was never an Ezri. IMO the new Trek series should be open to that kind of risk.
