X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Casting, Rumors, Pics till release)

@Samurai...I already posted that Lucas Till was playing Alex Summers in the film like six or seven posts above.

@Obi-Wan...I get the feeling he'll just be a connection to Scott.

Major X-Men: First Class Details Emerge
by Silas Lesnick
Aug 21st, 2010Casting rumors confirmed; Will be set in the 1960's
Several details from next summer's X-Men: First Class have been revealed thanks to an informal phone interview AICN conducted with the film's producer (and director of the first two X-Men films) Bryan Singer.

First Class is said to take place in the 1960's and will heavily play with the style of the day. Audiences will see John F. Kennedy as President and the parallel storyline of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X will play in the background. Overall, the look is said to emulate the original X-Men costumes far more than previous films have, though the films' chronology pre-dates the First Class story in the comics, meaning that many of the expected characters (Cyclops and Marvel Girl are listed by name) will not appear.

The villain of the film is, as rumored, Sebastian Shaw (played by Kevin Bacon). January Jone's Emma Frost will appear as the Hellfire Club's White Queen as well.

The central focus of the film is the friendship between Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Eric Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) and how it falls apart. Xavier will not be depicted as bald or in a wheelchair for the majority of the film, though we will learn what cripples him.

AICN's article makes frequent James Bond comparisons, nothing that that film will heavily play up the 60's style, but with retro future technology with a setting that spans the globe. Russia, specifically, is mentioned.

X-Men: First Class is slated to hit theaters on June 3, 2011.

Huh, well canon-wise Xavier is either crippled by an alien called Lucifer, by the Shadow King, or by Magneto himself.

I'm guessing it will be by Shaw this time around. Or the Shadow King.

Ultimate X-Men depicts Charles being crippled by Erik in the Savage Land...in Ultimate X-Men during a flashback sequence Charles is shown running from Magneto as Erik launches a metal pole that pierces Charles spine, thus crippling him. This I think was retconned though by "Ultimate Origins" and I've forgotten what the retcon was. Yeah Shadow King I think was responsible also in the X-Men Animated Series as well if I recall.

As I've said I'm cautiously optimistic about this movie...and the casting details do indeed confirm JacksonArcher's previous posts about the film. It's definitely going to be interesting to see how this is executed. I love period pieces as well.

I find that a little heavy-handed.

Well, that's a bit revisionist, since the comics' Xavier was totally bald by age 16.

^ Do either of those things really matter? I'm curious as to why you felt the need to point those two things out Christopher...

I do get that the real life 60's racial tensions will factor in somewhere with mutant phobia.

Didn't mutant phobia not crop up till much later? I could see some mutants despising how badly some white people treat black people and saying a thing or two.

Perhaps some dialogue that goes like

Erik- If homo sapiens can't treat their own kind with respect, what will they think about us?

Russia plays a big part in the story, as does Cuba and the Cuban missile crisis. Singer referencing the James Bond movies is an apt description -- it's a globally spanning story.

X-Men has always reflected prejudices...so it makes sense for the above figures to appear or at least be mentioned in the film since they're important political and social figures. I like the fact that the article states that there have been comparisons to James Bond...that bodes well.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was revealed in the film that the Hellfire Club manipulated events in the Cuban missile crisis for whatever reason.

Uhh, maybe you haven't noticed, but this is called a discussion board. That means we're allowed to talk about our reactions to things and make whatever observations pop into our heads. Do I need to clear every idle thought I have with you before I post it?

I started out feeling "meh" towards this film, but with Matthew Vaughn at the helm of a superhero film with a 1960s Bond-esque vibe my anticipation levels have significantly increased.

Well, the thing is that aside from "X-Men Evolution" none of the X-Men Adaptations (and even some of the original comics) have never gotten into just how the mutant hatred started up in the first place. Most start with the world already hating mutants and everything with nothing shown about just HOW they found out about mutants and why they started fearing them.

No need to jump all over me Christopher...this is a discussion board...and I was curious that you had that reaction to the plot details that's all. You stated that you felt that having JFK, Malcom X and Martin Luthor King Jr was a little heavy handed in your opinion without explaining why you felt that way. I wasn't criticizing your comments dude I was interested in YOUR OWN observations...while the rest of us commented on the plot details you picked those two specific statements. That's all.

I thought it was self-evident why it was heavy-handed. "Hey, here are two mutant characters that I've implicitly treated in my previous films as allegories for MLK Jr. and Malcolm X. So I'll actually include MLK Jr. and Malcolm X in this film about their formative years, just in case the audience hasn't gotten it by now." It's a heavy-handed approach to allegory if you come right out and show the thing being symbolized right alongside the thing symbolizing it.

Interesting thoughts and you're correct to a certain extent but we've obviously not seen how those figures will be used in the film yet. I took it that they're in there as being contemporary figures to that time period...I'm not really great at identifying allegorical material if that makes sense lol.

I don't know. I liked Vaughn's Kick-Ass a lot but I can't help but think this is going to be a major clusterfuck like X-Men 3 and Wolverine Shitty Origins. Xavier should be bald but I can overlook that.

What I can't overlook is the lack of Cyclops. Cyclops IS the X-Men...more than Professor X or Wolverine. The lack of respect towards his character in the films has been greatly disappointing.

The Hellfire Club is a logical villain to add to the movies although I would rather see them as a villain against the team in a film. If you're going to introduce Emma Frost, this is the way you have to introduce her. Villain first, than hero. Only way to do the character justice.

I really wish they would just do the original team but I knew they never were. My all-time favorite X team was Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Kitty. Of course I'd love to see a New Mutants movie but I doubt that would ever happen.
