X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Casting, Rumors, Pics till release)

I'm thinking he'll be pre-mutation since the first "X-Men" movie did have a cameo from him doing a talk show in his human form and since this isn't a reboot he should be pre-mutatation.

It was the second movie with a cameo of Steve Bacic as Hank McCoy. And since Bacic doesn't look or sound even remotely like Kelsey Grammer, I choose either to disregard that as actually being Beast or to assume that he was using an image inducer.

Heat Vision reports that Jennifer Lawrence Winter's Bone will play Mystique in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: First Class and Variety has confirmed that Kevin Bacon has signed to play the villain, though which character is still under wraps.

The two join James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Alice Eve, Nicholas Hoult and Caleb Landry Jones in the Matthew Vaughn-directed film, hitting theaters on June 3, 2011. Variety lists Aaron Johnson as part of the cast as well, but he has yet to be confirmed.

Mystique was played by Rebecca Romijn in the first three "X-Men" films.

quite the looker. I wonder if they will use the same full body blue paint/make up/prosthetics they used for Rabecca. And good news on Bacon! I'm betting Sinister, Sebastian Shaw, or a younger Senator Kelly.

Unless it's a money issue, they didn't have to recast for a "young" Mystique. She's as old as Wolverine, and can, y'know, look any age she wants.

Very true. Maybe she'll infiltrate the school and this will be her main form and we will only see the blue skin/yellow eyes every now and then, just to save some money for budget.

I have to wonder if this is a real prequel or a total reboot. I know Singer really only cares about Xavier, Magneto and Wolverine as characters.

If it was a reboot, surely they'd have gone the Cyclops, Beast, Marvel Girl, Ice-Man and Angel route.

No way; one girl, no non-whites of any kind? With the ratio even worse when you add in Professor X, Magneto, Kevin Bacon's character, etc.? And the original lineup got cancelled; they were never popular on their own.

I can't help but feel that a reboot would have been wiser. This is an excellent cast but it's hard to see McAvoy as Patrick Stewart and harder still to see Nicholas Hoult as Kelsey Grammer. Then you have all the continuity issues raised by the Wolverine movie and the flashback scenes in X3.

I personally would prefer to see X4, a sequel picking up where the third movie left off. But if they weren't willing to do that, I'm not sure that they needed to stick with this continuity to return to the X-world. I mean, would Batman Begins have been as good had it been compelled to maintain continuity with the Tim Burton movie?

Not to make this about race, buy since you brought it up, technically speaking, so far the castings announcements have predominantly been white, mostly European, but still white nevertheless.

I hope they really do get the casting down and make the full casting and character announcement next week at comic con

Well, the original team was made back in the 60s. Of course they were all going to be white males...

Hell, Storm was the only black one for years and Thunderbird was quickly killed off. The team didn't get more ethnic until the 90s and 2000s...

Oh, I understand that. It makes sense. But, equally, I can't imagine modern versions of the team going with that, for that reason. And it frankly doesn't matter all that much; the original five in the comics don't have any real significance in terms of the later incarnations of the team, as a group. Only Cyclops' place as Xavier's #1 recruit really any plot/character significance.

At a minimum, expect to have Storm on the team (which really works fine with her backstory; you just have Xavier actually retrieve her from Cairo as a kid; the only reason that didn't happen in the comics is that the established history prohibited it).

Hell, Scott being the first X-Man doesn't even have to be set in stone. I remember in X-Men EVO they had Wolverine and Storm as members before Scott, and this actually benefited him as a character since he wasn't shackled as the "Designated Leader" guy anymore. Plus it kept Logan in the background.

The sad thing is, every single adaptation of Scott continually leaves out the really interesting back-history he had before Xavier: How he was experimented and brainwashed on by Mr. Sinister, how he escaped and ended up as the sidekick to a mutant supervillain. How Sinister keeps coming after Scott either with the brainwashing or for further experiments.

All that stuff would make for a great movie character version if they were willing to bring any of it up.

Gee, even Marvel Girl? :wtf: Wow, that was daring for the '60s... ;)
The one girl rule back in the 60s was always puzzler. Sue leaves, Crystal joins. Wonder Woman leaves, Black Canary joins. Wasp leaves, Scarlet Witch joins. Scarlet Witch leaves, the Wasp comes back. The Legion was the exception. As was the JSA who had the GA versions of Wonder Woman and Black Canary on the team at the same time. (even in the late 1940s!!!)
