X-Men FC: Only $56 Million estimated for opening weekend.

Okay maybe September is the normal time frame, but the movie is still in theaters for goodness sake. Is this some sort of reverse psychology? See it now! Or are they content with the Box office numbers and are trying to entice folks with video releases. Doesn't this announcement seem too soon?

Besides, a video release in September would go great with some Halloween costumes of the X-Men team outfits or Magneto's get up. Oh wait, they don't plan on having any of that. Back to school backpacks and pencil boxes? No. I know this wasn't geared towards kids, but they are missing major opportunities.

Jane Eyre had a limit run in March and April and its dvd isn't coming out until August. I thought that was a long time! Some films are rushed out to video in only a few months.

If that's the case, then why is the 1970s era Super 8 doing well at the box office? Why did the 1970s era X-Men Origins: Wolverine also do well at the box office?
Super 8 is doing well? News to me. Wolverine did well because of Hugh Jackman's star power and the goodwill from the first two X-Men movies.

People always conjure up explanations for box office failure and for box office success, and the only right answer is Goldman's: Nobody Knows Anything.
That's most probably the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Explanations aren't as much necessary: first time movies will make huge bank if the audience enjoyed it thoroughly (Transformers 1, Hangover, Batman Begins) and then the sequels would have a rushed huge opening because of the goodwill from the first (TF2, Hangover 2, Dark Knight), but longetivity (Dark knight) is what proves what the audience truly liked and enjoyed. What's so difficult to understand that?

DVD's are always announced before anything else...and in this case it makes even more sense since Fox probably wants to see how DVD sales go before making any kind of announcement on a sequel.Bah that link is a speculative piece anyway with no date or extras announced. Sep sounds early....I heard first week of Oct a few weeks back. Sep is also when "Thor" is coming out.

Well Super 8 just went over $100 mil, and it only had a $40 Million budget, and no star attraction...so ya, I would say its doing just fine.

Super 8 is very profitable. Especially for a non-genre type of film with no celebrity actors. It's quite the success for Abrams, Paramount, etc.

You know X-Men: First Class is encroaching on Batman Begins territory, right? And will probably make it.

Batman Begins - Budget; $150 million. Worldwide gross; $373 million

X-Men: First Class - Budget; $160 million. Worldwide gross; $317 million, and still making $7 million a weekend just domestically. Factor in worldwide over the next month, and it'll be in exactly the same territory as Batman Begins.

That's true, except that Batman Begins earned much more of its money domestically, where studios get more of their money back (50-60% of ticket sales) compared to international grosses (an average of 40% goes back to the studio) where X-Men: First Class is doing well.

Using the above qouted percentages for returns to studio

Batman Begins

Domestic: uS$205.3m = 102.7 to 123.2
Foreign: US$167.4m = 67m

Total: US$169.7m -to 190.2m

X-Men: First Class (To Date)

Domestic: US$133.8m = 67m - 80.3m
Foreign: US$186.7m = 74.7m

Total = US$141.7 to 155m

Thanks for the math! That's awesome!

But what that indicates is that X-Men: First Class is well within range of Batman Begins level success.

Could First Class: Part 2 be a billion dollar blockbuster? Hrm...probably not. ;)

Of course the movie is still out so might just creep into break even at the Back Office, DVD/Blu-ray sales/rentals should return a reasonable proft.

Everyone would have laughed at you had you said TDK was going to make a billion.

No doubt about it. I don't think TDK's success, however, rides merely on its quality. I think there were several extenuating circumstances that made that kind of success a bit of a fluke.

Though, The Dark Knight Rises may prove me wrong! Ha!

Blu ray with deleted scenes in September already? Pre order already? Wow if true!

http://www.discdish.com/index.php/2011/06/27/new-release-x-men-first-class-blu-ray-and-dvd/

Why would they announce this, which is an eventual given, over the sequel, which everyone wants to know the answer to?

Wow, September already? Four months after the release of the movie has to be some kind of record, quickest release to dvd. Studios only do that when movies flop badly...:wtf:

Really? I guess you're too young to remember how fast Independence Day (A huge BO hit) was released to video back in 1996.;)

Yeah, I saw that one twice in the theater. I got it on VHS really quick. See, I'm one of the older folks around here. Scary, isn't it? ;)

I would agree that TDK's rise to a billion box office gross had several factors. One I think has to be quality of the film. People were engrossed by Heath Ledger's Joker performance along with the plot of the film. Word of mouth happened, largely positive reviews. Then Heath's death happened and that's when I think things steamrolled. I never a got a chance to see it in theaters due to my second foot surgery. :(

Somehow I think First Class is going to do monster DVD sales.

Here is a little more supposedly about the video release from Bleeding Cool that was posted at MFO. Okay, maybe my concept of time was way off, but do they really say 'a few weeks' ???

Bleeding Cool

Lucky! Thirteen Deleted Scenes For The X-Men: First Class DVD And Blu-Ray
Submitted by Brendon Connelly on June 29, 2011 – 5:43 pm

When the rather superb X-Men: First Class DVD and Blu-ray comes along in a few weeks, there’s going to be a decent sized crop of deleted scenes included.

Judging from a listing in the BBFC database, there’s going to be thirteen of them, with a total runtime of under fourteen minutes. So they’ll be brief. Not a surprise as the film had a really snappy pace.

Judging from what Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman told me back at the time of the release, much of the deleted material would revolve around Moira MacTaggart, her work at the CIA and her relationship with Charles.

It sounded to me like the film would benefit a touch from having the scenes edited back in, but – again judging from the BBFC’s listing – this isn’t the case, and they’ll be stand alone.

You know, why isn't this going to be some sort of ultimate super duper directors extend cut with restored footage? Or is that going to be the later magical double dip video release? I've been trying to find the huge Ulitmate Watchmen set on blu ray but I only ever see it on DVD. 14 minutes of footage here makes a little bit of sense though, add that back into the movie and it rounds out to about 2 and a half hours I suppose.

First Class doesn't really strike me as a movie that needs an Extended Cut. Sometimes the movie that's released in theaters is the Director's Cut. And I never got the sense that FC was missing anything important; it felt very complete while also moving at a nice pace.
