X-Men FC: Only $56 Million estimated for opening weekend.

I'm not posting this in the discussion and grading thread because I have not seen the movie yet.

I'm surprised the opening weekend gross was not a lot higher, considering the positive critical reception this movie has received. Perhaps the Wolverine prequel hurt the franchise' popularity more than I realized. I wonder if word-of-mouth will turn things around in the coming weeks.

Already discussed this in the First Class discussion thread. I stated that I wasn't surprised and predicted around $50 million for the opening weekend with it growing due to word of mouth. I really do think "The Last Stand" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" put a bad taste in a lot fans mouths.

Well if not that thread, then why not in the countless of other X-men threads that sprang up? Besides this news has already been posted in one of those aforementioned threads anyways. Regardless of the low Box Office opening, it's still a great movie getting good reviews. This will just have to be the one Marvel movie that slips under the radar despite being critically acclaimed.

After The Last Stand and Wolverine left a bad taste in people's mouths, I'm not surprised at all. But First Class has something neither of those movies had: excellent critical reception and positive word of mouth. So hopefully it ends up doing well overall.

My only issue I have with the articles that I've seen with the box office total is that they keep on blaming the fact that Wolverine isn't in it on the amount.

If anything was having an effect on it's box office it would be Thor still being out.

I'm pretty shocked this is the case. It's been selling out around here. I really hope the studios don't assume the lack if wolverine is why this failed

While it's not a monsterous amount, I would hardly call $56m between Friday and Saturday a failure. That's still a lot more than most movies tend to open with. Now, if it bottoms out over the next week and never recovers, then there'll be something to worry about.

I would say that's the other big factor. There are so many superhero movies this summer that even I was considering skipping this one. I might end up skipping Green Lantern instead. Considering X3 and Wolverine, I don't blame people for choosing to spend their money on one of the other movies this summer.

That being said, I think word of mouth will help a bit.

I wouldn't completely count that out. I know a few people who liked the previous X-Men movies (even Wolverine), but aren't particularly interested in this one because Wolvie's not in it.

What Admiral Young said. There's been an overreaction to the box office numbers by many critics.

They also aren't factoring in that it was graduation night on Friday for a lot of people.

But still, it will gain steam. And they already have a sequel in the works supposedly.

X3 and Wolverine were horrible. I'm in no rush to let those people at FOX take anymore of my money.

Hell, I'm tempted to just skip FC.

Essentially, with this line of thinking, you're rewarding Fox for making terrible X-Men movies, and punishing them for making a good one.

Yeah...that's it! Show them that when they hand over movies to talented filmmakers and end up with a great film that you won't go see it! That'll show them their mistake! Haha! We'd rather have a $90 million opening of "The Wolverine" directed by McG with Tom Rothman standing over his shoulder.

Haha! Yeah! Fuck you, Fox!

No...wait...that's a fuck you to film fans.

Sorry.

There was nothing great about XM:FC. It was stupid and convuluted. Rushed. As I had predicted.
