X-Men FC: Only $56 Million estimated for opening weekend.

In addition to X3 and Wolverine being crappy movies, there's also a distinct lack of marketting. At least, I haven't seen anything. Before I saw this thread I had no idea that it was out already.

Well, the bright side: If Fox stops making them, Marvel Studios gets the rights back... Avengers Vs. X-Men anyone...?

Actually, no, that sounds awful.

X-Men Vs. Avengers does sound horrible.

However, Marvel Studios getting the rights back sounds amazing.

And let's consider... Bridesmaids was made for about 30 million, it's made over 100 million...

Plus, you know, you could make it at home with Adobe After Effects for like under a million dollars. Movies don't have to cost that much. ;)

Unless you want to have stars or celebrities in them.

Well, yeah. Or, you know, professional crew people with experience. And art directors and costumers and makeup people. And insurance and distributors, and stuff. And maintain a schedule. And feed people, and house them on location. And...

I agree part of the marketing for First Class is the problem. I mentioned Bridesmaids because people knew about that film, knew of it in its initial weeks and it did well, but its return has fallen since.

Honestly, how can inflation prices be part of the comparison? Maybe tickets cost now more, but with so many people have less money and no jobs, I think inflation is a mute point. This did as well as the first film. That is at least the best they could have hoped for. I would like to think the combination of a steady box office and the positive reviews would be enough for them to make a sequel. People feeding their overgrown money dogs is what got them into trouble with the last two films.

Really, has anyone also stopped to consider there is no merchandising with this film? As opposed to getting your Wolverine figure and discount ticket with the Happy Meal and junk like that? You can't even get a t-shirt for this film. I'm sure if they had promotional merchandise like normal films that would make up box office difference.

Maybe Wolverine did more money, but the price of that is its universal panning.

Actually, when it came out some people insisted it was the best film in the series. Hey, wait a minute...

JacksonArcher gave Wolverine a B grade in its discussion topic. If he likes it then it must be good right? :rommie:

A couple pages later in that thread, JA reconsiders his initial impression of the movie and hates it like it deserves to be hated. ;)

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" had a big opening weekend because it was marketed well (IIRC) had bad ass trailers for the most part (I remembering being excited for it because of those trailers) it also dealt with the leaked print fiasco. Until people actually saw the film in the theaters did they realize like I did what a piece of crap it was.

Wow. I gave it a C+ in that thread. I must've been being generous.

I wonder if First Class was hurt by the fact that it's a "period piece."

If so, it doesn't bode well for Captain America.

My only issue I have with the articles that I've seen with the box office total is that they keep on blaming the fact that Wolverine isn't in it on the amount.
I wouldn't completely count that out. I know a few people who liked the previous X-Men movies (even Wolverine), but aren't particularly interested in this one because Wolvie's not in it.

I actually liked XO: Wolverine, but I only see these movies when they hit DVD or Netflix. I'll do the same for First Class. I only get to go to the movies about once a year, so I save my money for something really worthwhile.

Here in Australia XMFC, took $4.8 million over a 4 day period, but was beaten by The Hangover Part 2, which took $5.6 million over the same period. Plus there were more screenings of The Hangover Part 2 than X-Men First Class, besides the fact that X-Men movie has got better reviews all over the country. It might hit between 10 and 15 million, but deserves to be over 20 million.

The only figure I've tracked down for the UK is US$9m, haven't seen the film yet, but when I do go to the cinema which is not that often, I usually leave it till a week or two after release.

I dunno, I just didn't like it all that much. I didn't like or care about the majority of the characters involved in the story.

This movie is about Charles and Erik. The rest are foils for them and can demonstrate who is better, the teacher or the fighter.

Certainly had more substance than Wolverine, though, no?

What an accomplishment! Let's give it an Oscar!

Hence my problem with team movies in general. However, I say this was successful because it focused intently on a few characters, namely Xavier, Magneto and Mystique. All of their motivations were 100% believable and in the end, I feel they acted like real people. That's not something that can be said for any comic book movie. I'll chalk that up as a win.
