X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

Anybody with an evil laugh like that is doomed to a life of crime. and I should know.

Stewart & McKellen both citing Taylor Swift lyrics? Are they conspiring to tease fans or is she really going to be Dazzler? That would put past stunt casting to shame. How's her roller-skating?

How did Xavier get crippled in the first place in the 1990s cartoon? I thought I heard once of some iteration of the character where it was his powers that somehow prevented his legs from working correctly.

At the time the cartoon was made, the reason for Xavier's paralysis was that he'd battled another powerful telepath in the Astral Plane (The Shadow King) and his mental self's back got broken in the battle. So when he went back to his physical body he couldn't move his legs anymore because that's what his psychically enhanced mind was telling him.

This was why when Sinister took his powers away he could walk again. He lost his connection to the Astral Plane and thus his mental crippling was no longer in effect.

Of course, the show later said he was crippled by Magneto which throws that whole explanation out of whack.

One possible reason they used Magneto as the cause of him being crippled is because in the comics, the guy who crippled him for the first time did look a lot like Magneto (it wasn't him though).

It will be interesting to see if the movie even gets made now. Him wanting to play Gambit was likely the only reason the character was getting a solo film.

Yeah, Lauren Shuler-Donner was lobbying for him and identifying him as her ideal choice for Gambit long before the film was greenlit or he was cast.

The track record of X-men spin-offs that actually get made has been very shaky even before this.

After X-men 3 there was a long list of projects in development. Originally a Magneto origin
and young Xavier starting the X-Men were completely different films. I think it was Bryan Singer who developed the story and produced First Class who had the obvious and brilliant idea to combine that by exploring the early years when the two had been friends.

Of course Deadpool was in development hell for years. Even though it is getting made with Ryan Reynolds it has no real connection to him playing the part in Wolverine Origins.

Wolverine was the obvious choice to give a solo film. But that first film was not well received at all. Only affection for the character in general and Jackman in the role lead to a sequel. Even that had long pre-production with changing directors. It did good at the Box Office but not great. Probably due to bad memories from Origins.

It took First Class for the franchise to find its footing again but really Days of Future Past being a huge success is what lead to spin offs being viable again.

If Singer does not direct the next film after Apocalypse I hope he stays on as a producer. Plus they should offer him to direct a solo film for character he wants.

I was surprised to hear about Tatum leaving Gambit. He seemed to be really talking it up, and excited to be playing the character, so it's rather shocking to hear about his backing out of the movie. I wonder what happened?

I've heard a lot of people saying it's a negotiation tactic. He's trying to get something from FOX (possibly directing a movie), so he's threatening to walk from Gambit.

Well, if Tatum was negotiating for something, he may have gotten it. He's now officially signed to do the Gambit film.

From what the article says, I wonder if Fox is looking at Gambit as a potential replacement for Wolverine now that Jackman's retiring from the role, taking over his slot as the edgy antihero in future movies. Which is not a connection I ever would've made.

IIRC, Hugh at one stage mooted Channing as his replacement in the Wolverine role, though I think it was a sort of off-the-cuff and not especially serious comment.

I would not be surprised if Tatum has a small cameo in Apocalypse now. It is still filming.

Earlier in an interview he was unsure if Gambit should appear in an X-men film first or his own solo film. Its likely that his pay for multiple films was a factor in his on that opinion.

As I pointed out in the Gambit thread (for the opposite reason), we have no idea when Gambit is set.

The ages of the characters are all over the place. With Sinister's genetic manipulations, any characters ages could be tweaked with minimal explanation.
