X-Men 4

I think there is a lot of potential for future X-Men sequels. I think their stories have the broadest, most "cinematic" scope of nearly any superheroes out there. And I'll reserve judgment on any such sequel until I see it. All I ask right now is that they tie it into the previous 3 movies and that they bring back Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier.

I think it is unlikely that they would cancel the Magneto solo movie but they wouldn't need to; that film won't even have Ian McKellen, since it will center around his origins as a youth and first meeting Charles Xavier.

Frankly, I think that Magneto will probably never happen because it resides in a bizarre position. You can't really do the movie with Ian McKellen because it's a prequel and you need a much younger actor. On the other hand, you can't really do it without McKellen either because, IMO, his performance is one of the main things that got movie audiences interested in his character in the first place.

(Although, I suddenly had a thought. What about James McAvoy as a young Magneto? You think that would fly?)

Well I see a Magneto working just as well as Hannibal Rising did i.e. not very well. Once you remove the actor that made the role famous, you lose a lot of the appeal, as The Borgified Corpse so eleqouently put. Plus you have a script by the writer of the Adam Sandler remake of The Longest Yard, and David Goyer as director, and you can see how the project just doesn't seem to have that much appeal.

I doubt Patrick Stewart will return to any future X-Men sequels, not that he wouldn't if he was asked, but...I mean, they killed him off! And I tend to forget that coda at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand ever existed. I'm not a big fan of that movie, but I will admit that his death gave the film at least some resonance and emotional depth. Not a lot, but some.
