WTH is going on in the Trek Universe Now?

Well I've considered getting back into Star Trek Books.

Last book I read was DS9 Unity after the Avatar Book Series which I enjoyed.

It's been so long, and I mean long and so many books have come out and All I know is that the Voyager Universe I know has been turned crazy!

So can anyone give me a recommended reading guide so that I can try and get back into Trek Reading?

If you are wanting to get into the current Trek Lit universe, the best place to start is the A Time To... miniseries, which follows the TNG crew during the year leading up to Nemesis. If you don't want to read the entire nine book series, then the last three are the best and most important to the Trek Lit universe.

Alot of people have also said that the absolutely amazing Destiny trilogy is also a good jumping on point, but that actually continues to build off of the series that were set up in ATT, so I'd say that it's probably the best place to start.

What's currently going on in Voyager and the DS9 Series?

Those are the only books I really read....

I know there have been some mirror universe sagas out as well.

Not a whole lot has been happening on the DS9 front. There have been a handful of books following Unity which are worthwhile. However, the fact that the DS9 Relaunch was set a couple of years prior to the TNG/VOY Relaunch timeframe was causing some difficulties, so the next DS9 book accelerates it to the post-Nemesis timeframe.

Both the DS9 and VOY relaunches from this point forward, as well as just about everything else, will be heavily influenced by the Destiny trilogy, so you should probably read that. Whether or not you choose to also read the TNG books leading up to it is your call; frankly, several of them aren't that good.

You know, I think I may start with the Time to... books, especially after all the meh reviews of Death in Winter. It's hard for me to jump into the middle of a series. And actually, I read the first chapter of the first book last night, and I enjoyed it...who knows...

Still I think after I read the Genesis Wave books I started to loose interest. It was only the relaunch DS9 Titles of Avatar and Unity that got me into DS9 since it sorta tied up that loose end as to the whole thing with Sisko and the prophets....

I never did get all the Gateways series books or the Mission Gamma books.

I think they're gaining dust with all the TNG Books I got and the DS9,and Voyager books that I've found at various thrift stores over the years stowed in my closet on the shelf in there.

I recommend you find a series you like and just start reading everything published recently. Memory Beta has some good timelines, etc.

I completely skipped the TNG books and went right to Destiny and the Titan books without missing a beat. Any of the "earth-shattering" plot points from the TNG books are recapped if they become important again. I read most of the DS9 books too, up until about a year or so ago. I agree: if there is a series you want to skip for lack of time or money, that's the one.

I haven't read any of the "Time To..." books, and I don't feel I missed anything despite a few vague references to something bad happening at a place called Tezwa.

The TNG post-Nemesis books are hit-and-miss.

I'd give the Enterprise relaunch a miss. Some seem to like it, but they're all wrong.

Start Titan - the first three (all I've read so far) are great.

Destiny was great. I read the first Titan before hand to 'meet' the crew properly. Losing the Peace and A Singular Destiny are enjoyable follow-ups.

I'm only three books into the DS9 relaunch, and am enjoying.

I've read the Voyager: Homecoming double. I enjoyed it, but I've read there was some sort of fuss and controversy about it. No idea what. I'm not going near Spirit Walk with a ten-foot pole. I *hate* Chakotay.

Some totally subjective recommendations (if you'd like ones better suited for you, tell us more of what you liked in the past):

Orion's Hounds was the only Titan novel I finished - loved it. Really liked the diverse Titan crew and the book broadened the horizons of the Trek Universe exploring space-born/living lifeforms.

The Buried Age (also written by Christopher Bennett) was similarly brilliant for exploring galactic civilization in the cosmically ancient Trek past.

I liked the Andorian segment of the Worlds of DS9 series. The writer's style took getting used to but the exploration of the Andorians was rich and unparalleled.

The Never Ending Sacrifice aka Les Cardassians Miserables was also good.

I can't recall what else I've read since Unity. Though, all of these are different from your standard crew/series fair.

A lot's been published. You did mention Voyager and from what I've been able to gather around these boards, Unworthy is great though you may need to read its predecessor Full Circle (also good) to get the full impact - someone who's read them chime in here.

I liked the Andorian segment of the Worlds of DS9 series. The writer's style took getting used to but the exploration of the Andorians was rich and unparalleled.

The novel I was ready to read in 1980. A 24 year wait.

Excellent summary. If you want to cull list that down a little, I'd suggest these:

Articles (If you want to know more about some of the events, go back to the Time to series and the first 2 Titan novels)

Orion's Hounds (the best of the Titan novels, IMO. This book will give you enough intro to the ship and its crew. And Troi finally gets a good story!)

Greater Than the Sum (the best of the post-Nemesis/pre-Destiny TNG novels [no, Christopher is not paying me!] There is enough recap about the other TNG novels towards the beginning of the book that it will bring you up to speed.)

Destiny trilogy (Now, if you want to know more about some of the Aventine's crew, read Unity from the DS9R series beforehand. It has a thorough recap of the DS9R books that came before it before you even read the first chapter.)

So, that reduces you to only four book before the Destiny trilogy: Articles of the Federation, Orion's Hounds, Greater Than the Sum, and Unity. That's not quite as daunting.

Now, since you've asked specifically about Voyager and DS9:

The two latest Voyager books, Full Circle and Unworthy, are excellent novels! In Full Circle, Kirsten brings you from the four Golden novels to the current timeline. In Unworthy, Voyager is part of a fleet that returns to the Delta Quadrant.

In December, there will be a new DS9R novel, Rough Beasts of Empire, written by DRG3. It will bring the DS9 saga up to the "current" timeline of TNG, TTN, and VOY.

Umm, do you mean Unity? The recap in the beginning of Avatar is of the TV series.
