WTF, TAS getting Blu-Ray and DS9 not?

I know I'm late to the invitation discussion but it breaks my heart to see DS9 getting shipped for Blu Ray releases and being skipped over HD remastering too. I'm one of those fans who consider it to be my favorite series in the Trek universe.

Maybe for the 25 anniversary ...if the profets are in good mood.

I'm actually (right now) watching "Trials and tribble-ations" on the Bluray of TOS, it looks soooo good, but I dont know if this episode has been upscaled or reconverted. In fact, I even didn't know that this episode came with the BR pack.

I think DS9 will get the eventual blu-ray release, the 25th seems like the perfect time to do it.

Currently re watching the series on Netflix, this show is desperate for an HD update.

Yes. Yes it is.

Lots of us do.

No.

There's another thread doing this to death. Hundreds of pages ! It would cost more than the TNG release and sell less. And the TNG release failed financially.

Improvements in technology will not make the manpower cheaper that is required to locate the film elements, clean and rescan them, recompile, reedit and redo the CG.

The only hope is that there will be a cheap and nasty upscale and digital 'tweak' for sale to TV stations and they try to sell a few Blurays of it too, but at best we would get nothing like the TNG release, and with the decline of physical media they probably wouldn't even bother.

Take a look at the other thread - it'll crush any hopes you have. Truly.

I really don't think the numbers will ever justify DS9 getting the same remaster treatment as TOS and TNG.

On Netflix, the episodes don't look to have the same compression as the DVD's. It really does improve the experience. I haven't watched "Trials and Tribble-lations" on Blu-ray in a really long time, I'll have to do that at some point.

Mike Okuda will soon tweet "the best way to get DS9 on Blu-Ray is to purchase TAS on Blu-Ray."

And that's what should be done without Okuda saying that in a Tweet, but fans refuse to listen, and so, what happened before with the TNG Blu-Ray sets sales-wise will happen again.

To be fair to fans, how many times are we suppose to buy these various series?

The grocery stores and Targets in my area sell plenty of blu rays.

Kor

So does the HMV chain and the Best Buy chain here in Toronto. Plus, 4K DVD is coming soon.

I am a fan. Who else is suppose to be buying these, exactly?

There are other, younger fans besides you that haven't owned anything that's Star Trek on DVD before that this is being sold to.

This may be the only piece of DS9 we'll see in HD, and it looks glorious...

I'm not sure there is much of a "young" fanbase. Not to the degree there was in the 70's, 80's and 90's. It is very much up to older fans who have already bought these things over and over. Which I did, bought the first five seasons of TNG on Blu, and two of the individual releases.

But, some folks just aren't double-dippers, especially in the age of streaming.

I'm 53 and apart from half a dozen VHS releases of TNG 2 partners, and the movies on VHS and DVD, I've purchased everything once - last year ! TAS, DS9 and Voyager on DVD and TOS, TNG and ENT on Bluray.

I wait...

P.S. - going to have to double dip on the TAS Blurays when the price drops :)

It's an upscale, and a shoddy one at that.

If you think that looks "soooo good", you should check out the other shows on Blu-ray :p

I hate to sound like a broken record (no I don't) but...physical sales are not the only revenue stream to support an HD conversion. If that is the justification CBS is using, their managers are out of touch with modern television consumption.

What if they "re-aired" DS9 in HD on CBS all access. This would be another way to motivate trek fans to stay loyal to the format. Give us an episode a week for 176 weeks.

I mean, do I need to call a meeting at CBS or what? Am I the only one with ideas? WTH is happening in those offices? Just fancy private jets and fruit baskets I bet... (am I losing the "Attitude is Everything" award?)

Also, since we are talking about Target in Australia....I recently found out that Target in Australia is a completely different company from the USA company. I smart.

Since CBS is making a ton of money, I'd say they have a better handle on the situation than you do. Did you ever stop to think those streaming rights aren't exactly generating a ton of cash? CBS likely has a whole department that does nothing but crunch numbers on no longer produced properties, to figure out just how to make money off of them.
