It's pretty cool to see it in motion...

Over Norway...probably Slartibartfast checking out his fjords, they've won awards you know.

Having now seen some video footage, looks like someone just jumped back into hyperspace...

Also, one site had footage of a similar thing taken over Tomsk, Russia in 2006. Hmmmmm.

It wasnt an UFO...it was only the Russians:lol:

This from BBC:

"Norwegians have been left mystified by a strange light display in the night sky captured over a military base in Skjold.
Eyewitnesses were left wondering whether they had seen a UFO.
However a statement from Moscow later confirmed that a missile launch from a Russian submarine in the region had failed"

Here's actual video of the spiral forming as the rocket spins out of control. Pretty neat looking Fail.

Yeah -- It's "neat" until someone loses an eye.

Why do you think it went down? Odin didn't want to sacrifice his other eye, so he shot it down with his spear, Gungnir.

I just hope some nutty Christians didn't stare into the lights too long -- they'd probably go blind, like that bunch who stared into the Sun, bless their hearts. -- RR

Emily Lakdawalla had an entry about this on the Planetary Society blog, including the audio for a radio-show appearance in which she explained what happened, as well as an animation by unmannedspaceflight.com's Doug Ellison, which illustrates how this rocket launch fail could have produced the pattern observed.
