Writing In A New Chekov

With the recently untimely death of Anton Yelchin yesterday what type of scenario do you think would used to write a new Chekov into the cast?

Maybe Chekov is on leave away from the Enterprise and is captured by an unknown alien race and has his face transformed due to alien experimentation.

What about a transporter malfunction causing Chekov to change his appearance?

Maybe a top of the line CGI and supreme graphics will keep Chekov around.

It will be interesting none the less in how a new Chekov is written into the story.

....but maybe this is the first time that a major bridge character will actually be written out of Star Trek and replaced by someone new.

If he is written out, it might happen in the IDW comics that follow Beyond. We could see a female character to even out the cast some more, especially with Alice Eve absent, or a series of one-off characters take the navigator role. Or Arex, since they can do better effects in live action movies now.

His leaving for training and possibly serving elsewhere actually fits if they want to re-cast. He'll come back less youthful and more battle hardened.

No offense, but this is all incredibly silly. Do you honestly think Paramount is worried about this? I'd think they'd be more concerned that a young man died in a tragic accident rather than how they're going to replace him in a fictitious movie series.

How they're going to replace Chekov is irrelevant right now, and making dumb threads about it disrespects Yelchin's memory.

The creative folks behind nuTrek will find a dignified solution. It is a terrible tragedy that they have to address the passing of Trek legend and the untimely death of a brilliant addition to the future of Star Trek in the same film.

On the whole, when actors die during an ongoing production, it's often considered more respectful to retire the character than to recast. The next movie (assuming there is one) could simply establish that Chekov got a promotion and a transfer to another ship. After all, he wasn't in the first season or the animated series, so it's not like Star Trek can't get by without the character.

If Yelchin had simply had to bow out because he got a lead role in some other movie, I'd say sure, fine, recast the role. Recasting worked out pretty great the first time -- they managed to assemble an amazingly good ensemble, and Yelchin was one of its brightest lights. But under the circumstances, I say retire the character.

As someone already suggested, say he was promoted to the Reliant. Just like I prefer to think Spock Prime is still "out there" in Trek's world, I'd like to think the same of Chekov.

I believe the only time a character has ever been re-cast in the shows has been due to the original actor being unavailable or uninterested. At least that's all I know. Ishka (aka "Moogie"), for example.

I'd like that. It would help address some of the gender balance issues with the TOS line up. If a woman of color was cast it would help in that area too.

I don't think they will, especially in this instance. And I agree that they'll probably go with a woman, possibly a new character.
