Writing for Rookies #9: Dignity vs. Comfort?

What’s more important? Being comfortable or going for your dreams? Brandon is moving from NYC to Los Angeles after quitting a very great career to pursue his dream of being a Hollywood writer. Despite taking an awfully big risk, Brandon believes that failing at something he wants to do is much more important than not knowing if he could have made it.

He challenges all potential writers to believe in themselves as he embarks on his personal quest.

Who is Brandon? Is this a work of fiction? is Brandon a clone? How does this relate to science fiction and fantasy? I am not a mod, but doesn´t this border on spam?

This is funny, because every now and then a person asks this.

I am a comic book and sci-fi writer and I do a podcast for newbie writers who want basic info on how to start a career in comics and sci-fi.

This is a free podcast and I have posted the link here many times. I make ZERO money off of Writing for Rookies, I just do it because I remember how hard it was for me to get my career started when no one would want to answer my "rookie" questions about how to get started in the biz.

Maybe if you clicked on the link or just did a little research, you might put the pieces together for yourself.

Why do people always go to the negative on here?

Well, to be frank, this is still a subtle form of self promotion and not a science fiction nor fantasy topic. You could of at least have posted it in the fan fiction section. It might have more relevance.

Well, I'm sure Michael J. Stackpole's podcast has come up here before and it's a podcast about genre writing, so...

My question would be isn't NYC pretty much the second largest writer's market in terms of TV/film?
Anyway, good luck. I hope moving out west works out for you.

Question is, why do you care either way?

If this is bothering all the people who are out there, then I will be happy to repost someplace else, but generally, I have gotten positive responses.

So again, why do you care either way? If it is not relevant to you, then just ignore it.

Good question.

No, NYC isn't necessarily a place for TV/Film writing. Even if a show is shot in NYC, the original production staff and studio is located in LA.

Trust me, I tried, and most insiders told me to go to LA first, get established, and then the jobs come in all kinds of places.

Thanks for the kind words though.

Maybe you could just join one of the 10 L&O shows. ;)
But I guess we're sort of at a point where it's possible to write in a completely different place than where something it shot and still make relatively quick changes. I suppose all the power is still sort of centred around there too.

Ah, just listened to the episode and I kind of know how you feel; hence my doing an English Lit PhD which for all intents and purposes, is a dead end degree. Still, it's the only way I can do the type of writing I want to do and get it published, so I'm happy here for the time being. It's not as drastic as uprooting yourself completely and moving across the country, but I'm with you in spirit. :)

What a frakkin boring, obvious question. Any fictional work would choose the latter. I'd be impressed at any writer that could create a good story that argues for the former.

And clicking on links is boring unless I have some good reason to expect it to be worthwhile. Convince me and maybe I will.

And if you can't handle this level of rejection, hoo boy. You will never survive LA.

By fictional work you mean fictional character?

Anyway, if you don't understand the context, he's talking about making a real world decision to give up a comfortable career and financial security in order to pursue a dream.
Very easy to consider in the context of fiction. Very hard when it's your own future on the line and you could end up losing all your money if you fail.
