Probably, no one ever told them of said Guide. With a Writers’ Guide and 2 seasons of episodes behind them, I wonder how in the Hell some of the 3rd Season writers came up with such lame ideas and characterizations.

Freiberger didn't seem to have a solid grasp on the overall concept, judging by a certain comment that he is said to have made when he was joining the production. With a Writers’ Guide and 2 seasons of episodes behind them, I wonder how in the Hell some of the 3rd Season writers came up with such lame ideas and characterizations.

Working with @Harvey and thus having read some of the story related memos around Gerrold's 3rd season submissions, methinks this is not an entirely accurate assessment, understandably tinged by his own experience. This isn't the kind of letter you write if you want people to see you as a team player in Hollywood, and he may have screwed himself a bit. This column from the April 11,1969 edition of Life magazine seems apropos for the latter part of this thread:

According to a friend who once found the "TAS Writers' Bible" in the donated research archive (ie. the special science fiction collection) at the Paley Library at Philadelphia's Temple University. (It's a non-circulating collection, but anyone with a legitimate excuse can get permission to browse through specific items.) Essentially, it's a TOS bible with an extra page or two added - there was a little hand-drawn map showing the location of Cait in the Lynx constellation, and another section briefly describing Arex and M'Ress.
I'd really like to know if anyone has a copy of the TAS bible, which has been mentioned here before by @Therin of Andor:
I'd love to see that hand-drawn map! (I once contacted someone at Temple, hoping to get a glimpse. Unfortunately, the Paley Library has now permanently closed, and they never got back to me about where exactly the collection in question was moved.)
