Wrap-up movie for TNG/DS9/VOY

I think it's pretty clear at this point that there won't be another TNG movie. There has never been one for DS9 or VOY and won't either, especially since all the relevant actors have moved onto other projects. The only thing we've had since is a TOS reboot.

I was thinking... what about a wrap-up movie for the TNG/DS9/VOY series trilogy? It wouldn't have to be about any particular ship or space station. It would essentially be about Starfleet and the Federation, a number of key people and their reports who are involved with addressing a few serious threats that were still looming out there when Voyager ended: the Borg and the Dominion. Of course, there could be time spent aboard a future Enterprise and/or DS9 with someone else in command. But the story itself would be primarily from a Starfleet HQ perspective.

When Voyager ended, we're left knowing that the Borg are out there in a very significant expanse. They've got transwarp hubs reaching to each quadrant. Although species 8472 could beat the Borg, the Voyager crew gave the Borg the technology to defeat them. Eventually species 8472 retreated back to fluidic space, presumably to stay there unless the Borg tried to seek them out again, using their new-found technique of destruction.

When DS9 ended, the Dominion war was over, but the Dominion was far from being completely defeated. They retreated back to the Gamma quadrant. Yet, who knows if they would eventually try to take over the Alpha quadrant again.

The story I'm imagining is that the Borg haven't given up. They start attacking the Romulans, Klingons, Andorians, and the bulk of the Federation simultaneously. Voyager helped arm the Federation with far greater means of defense and offence, but it's not enough for the degree of invasion taking place. The necessary union of Alpha quadrant forces is made, but analysis proves that it's just not enough. They need the Dominion to help. When the Vorta are contacted, their first response is "Well, let the Borg defeat you. The job will be done for us." Only, they are informed that the Borg will go after the Dominion as well and at that point, they will be unstoppable. After some discussion, the Vorta agree. An alliance is made.

But the Borg have proven to be even stronger than before. They have developed nanoprobe missiles that when striking a ship, send swarms of nanoprobes all throughout it, converting the ship and crew to Borg technology in a matter of minutes. The Romulans are completely overwhelmed and their entire civilization is converted to Borg. We even see what appear to be Borgified Romulan ships come attacking (Romulan ship shape, but with a Borg like skin and weaponry).

It begins to look like it's over... too late for humanity and all sentient life. All species are destined to become Borg. But Admiral Riker reminds the Federation about some banished technology... and they are forced to dust off the plans for an interphasic cloaking device. Using this, the Borg missiles would be ineffective. And a Federation ship would be able to fly through a Borg ship, depositing an anti-matter explosive inside. It becomes a race against time to put it into action.

In the end, the Borg are finally defeated. Special probes containing anti-Borg viruses are sent out to find the last vestiges of Borg infiltration. Although the transwarp hubs were destroyed in the conflict, the technology was analyzed enough before hand so that they may be recreated, further uniting the Federation and other galactic interests. At first, it looked as though the Dominion would seek to gain a foothold in the Alpha quadrant, by taking over the former Romulan empire worlds. But it is uncovered that a rogue faction was responsible for the incursion. In the end, Vulcan expands to occupy Romulus... but not exclusively, as they invite other species to coexist with them.

At last, it looks like the Federation and its allies will have a peace that will endure for the foreseeable future. All is well.

So... just my idea of a wrap-up movie. Thoughts or alternatives? :)

Would make less profit than another JJ movie so why would they bother?

Well, I won't dispute the fact that JJ Abrams is on a roll, not much different than the legendary Spielberg touch. He is working on the nuTrek part II, but I doubt he'll be interested in doing anything further with Star Trek.

Yes, JJ Abrams doing the TNG/DS9/VOY trilogy movie would be more profitable, but there's still profit to be made. It's not like nobody will do a sci-fi movie without the absolute best and most profitable director/producer.

DS9 and Voyager were wrapped up as I'm concerned. Vooager should've come home a bit earlier to have some kind of aftermath in my mind but it ended pretty OK in my mind. Seven seasons of each show amounts to alot of television and if anything they both mightve gone on twoo long.

I agree. Forget wrapping up DS9 and Voyager. That happened well enough in 7 years of TV.

Give us a few movies on the Romulan war.

Yes, DS9 and Voyager were "wrapped up"... but there were still some things brewing in the background that weren't. I'm really talking more about the Federation and Starfleet represented by the trilogy as the movie. Anyway... just a thought. Who knows... in 20 years, we may see a reboot of TNG. ;)

I think there needs to be a new TV series set a while after the previous 24th century Trek events. It wouldn't feature old characters, but would deal with events that have already occured and stick to the continunity already established, albeit with a lot of room for new ideas.

I think that Star Trek works best nowadays with story arcs and continunity. Many other shows go by this way of storytelling and its much more engaging to the viewer than a series of one off episodes dealing with a major issue in the space of an hour.

Character focus is another thing that Star Trek needs to do more of. The majority of TV viewers like characters that they can identify with and relate to. That is why a show such as Flashforward gets cancelled and a show such as Fringe continues. Both are very science fiction heavy and use the continunity method of narration, but the difference is Fringe has character that a lot of people can identify with.

ENT didn't last because people had got tired of the almost continual release of Star Trek spin offs. You had TNG from the late 80's followed by DS9 and VOY which ran at the same time until VOY ended in 2001. Following this ENT was immediately the successor and despite being much more friendly to the non trekkie/trekker, it was just released at a time where people were bored of Star Trek. A show following the 2nd reboot movie (but not set in the same time continunity) will likely be much more successful and along the lines of TNG acclaim.

^ Unfortunately reality, comedy, vampire, and fantasy/magic oriented shows sell the best for the current target audiences. I think it'll be a while before Star Trek is revived in serial format.

Honestly, I can't see them regressing to the old continuity at this point. Why would they want to go backwards like that? Any new shows or movies will most likely to be set in the new continuity or maybe even the next one.

I can't think of an instance where a movie or tv series went back to the old continuity after a reboot, let alone years and years later. That's just not how it works.

^I'd say an all-new, ground-up reboot of TOS, with no canon baggage whatsoever (unlike STXI's time travel created alternate timeline) will be the future of TV Trek.

Give us a few movies on the Romulan war.
I'd love that and I guess I'll never be satisified with how Enterprise skipped over it. Go to IMDb and it's even mentioned in the fucking series synopsis. Manny Coto, Mike Sussman and those guys seemed to be finally building toward it in Season 4, until "These are the Voyages..." had to come along. But unless it's acknowledged in the next film, like another Admiral Archer throwaway or a crossover embellishment to reimagining "Balance of Terror"... there's just no reason for it.

A theory I'd been working on, was that the U.S.S. Kelvin's destruction, might've been the Archduke Ferdinand event that triggered a second Romulan War. Another "Yesterday's Enterprise" scenario, descending into dire consequences for the Federation, all the while Kirk and Spock were growing up. Such as Vulcan leaving the alliance, large numbers of casualities enough for Starfleet to streamline Academy training - so some cadets can make Captain in the time it takes to get a university degree (or higher responsibilities with less time spent earning it). As if the Original Series rate of promotion, was by enlarge a reflection of peacetime. The average life expectancy being higher before, for a 30+ year old (rising through the ranks over a decade), to be considered one of the youngest Captains.

Any idea for what should come next TV-wise, will obviously require getting a leg-up from the Abrams-universe. I presume they've done all the helping they're ever likely to in the last film and now plan to push ahead.

I read the story for the cancelled Romulan War movie (Star Trek: The Beginning). The Enterprise is at Risa and misses the whole thing. The "Earth/Romulan War" was a week-long battle in Earth orbit between Romulan drone ships and Starfleet fighter pilots. Kirk's grandfather Tiberius Chase is a hotshot fighter pilot who steals the warp 7 prototype USS Spartan and flies to Romulus with a nuclear bomb. Shran had a cameo.

They cancelled it in favour of JJ's TOS reboot.

One main problem right now, reality shows are really cheap to make. Good space shows are really expensive. Would Star Trek fans be happy with a "budget" series? Something like Stargate Universe with very few aliens and most scenes shot on the ship?

Okay. The reality of the situation is, this is never going to happen. The 24th century Prime universe is done, as far as TPTB are concerned. Each series got a finale, whether good or lousy. With the reboot, there's absolutely no point in going back to that continuity when there's a whole new continuity to create.

Now, if you're asking me about my fantasy, and not reality, yes, I would love for there to be a huge TV movie focusing on what eventually happened to all our favorite characters; giving them one last au revior. In my fantasy world, all the sets to TNG, DS9 and Voyager would be rebuilt, along with all the original props, uniforms, alien prosthetics and makeup, not to mention all the ship and station models (to be fair they'd be in CGI now, but they'd still have to be "built"), and all the actors are re-hired with exhorbitant salaries to match, all without any care at all about the budget, because we have millions and millions of fantasy dollars to spend on this. Oh, and let's not forget about a fantastic script that treats every single character from each show to a great end without teetering into fanwank territory. And by all means, let's bring back the Borg and the Dominion, because we all know those things are what make a Trek story great.

Okay...so I'm being a bit facetious here. In all honesty, the only series that should have gotten a proper ending was ENTERPRISE, and it's far too late for something like that to happen now.

Bingo.

I'd like to think the chances of a future series set in the Prime Universe, increase with whoever ends up getting that gig. I doubt Paramount actually care what constitutes a reboot. It's a definition bandied about all too much, and often isn't entirely accurate. Not in the remake sense everyone thinks. Just the usual marketing double speak to make it seem fresh or a new jumping on point, for an old property.

If it's a Star Trek show that doesn't involve Kirk or Spock, but other characters instead (as the franchise proved it can perpetuate an existence from - anywhere from a modest ENT level to TNG at its height), it wouldn't matter as far as I can tell.

If that is the main requirement, then we are basically looking at yet another universe. Unless it can be written in such a way, that characters seem to have had the same influences and experiences as before. While modern production values are the only thing that could lead anyone to think reboot. Maybe soft at best.

My reasoning for a new show being set in the Prime continunity is the fallout from the destruction of Romulus. Surely there is a lot still there to be explored? Since its set nearly a decade after the last TNG appearance, it doesn't need to feature any previous characters and could start with a completely new crew.

The Abrams' movies cover the reboot verse, whilst a new show covers the previous verse. After all, it was clearly shown in the film that both Spock and Nero came from the Prime verse and that creates a little bit of intrigue for the newer viewer.

Honestly, I don't understand the mentality that TNG\DS9\VOY never got an ending, and we will recieve one some day. This has more to do with people living in denial, than anything else. Each series received finales. TNG (and by extension, VOY with Janeway's cameo)received a big screen send off in Nemesis. Yes, it was a crap movie, and TNG went out with a whimper rather than a roar, but there it is. It's done.

Enterprise received its sendoff: either These are the Voyages or Terra Nova. Take your pick. Not to mention, These are the voyages was also intended to be a "Franchise Farewell" to the Piller, Berman, Braga era.

I am positive that TNG\DS9\VOY era is over, and will never return to big or small screen. Those actors are done with Trek, and Paramount\CBS is done with them, too. The best you can hope for is Star Trek Online and Pocket books. Period.

Star Trek 11 was a hit, and will spawn sequels, but honestly, we will be lucky if it is a quadrilogy. There will not be a series based on the TOS crew, at least with the JJ Abrams actors\continuity. Ever. Those actors are big screen actors, and will not want to do a TV series. Also, they will not want to be typecast.

So yeah, I don't see Trek returning to the small screen for a long long time, if ever. If it ever does return, and considering we are in an age which studios reboots\remakes anything (IE Hulk, Spider-man, Batman, planet of the apes....even Fright Night!) it will be yet another reboot, and unrelated to anything that came before. But I would give that at least 15 years from now, or 10 years after the last JJ Abrams Trek movie, whichever is first.
