Wow to think I almost started to read the Shattner books.

GalaxyClass1701

Captain
Captain
Star Trek books are not cannon and the Shatner books are not even cannon for the normal novels (doesn't get more uncannon than that) but I was going to give them a chance. Until I read this description.

The Borg and the Romulan Empire have joined forces against the Federation, and their ultimate weapon is none other than James T. Kirk, resurrected by alien science to destroy the Borg's most formidable enemy: Jean-Luc Picard.

What was he thinking? :scream:

That he could make money, draw fans in, and make Kirk Not. Dead.

I would rather see Kirk die 10000000000 times before I saw this happen.

The Totality trilogy is okay. And I managed to get through Preserver.

The Shat books are fun. Batshit crazy, but fun. Except Captain's Glory. That was weak (and the USS Calypso was like bad fanfic).

Did you hear about Kirk's mutant hermaphrodite child, Joseph T'Kol T'Lan Kirk? Makes Borg/Romulan alliances seem as routine as opening hailing frequencies...

 No what is that from?

In 'The return' Kirk is resurrected, proceeds to beat up every member of TNG's crew, then proceeds to destroy the collective by PULLING A LEVER.
The romulan borg alliance was only there to resurrect Kirk and mention TOS lore alot.

So - if you think Kirk should be the ultimate hero/saviour/cool guy in the universe, you may like the book.
In no - I do NOT recommend it.

A Romulan experiment gone wrong, Or something.

Nope. Joseph's mother was an engineered Klingon-Romulan hybrid. Joseph was one-thirds Human, Klingon and Romulan.

And somehow a Preserver with magical powers

(he's born at the end of Preserver, and stars in Captain's Blood -which also features Spock faking his own death in a vain attempt to martyr himself- and Captain's Glory)

That's right! It's been so long (deliberately) since I read any of them that I had forgotten.

I remember reading the end of the Captain's Blood and thinking "Holy shit!" Then I paused and went "Naw."

I liked the first two books in the MU trilogy but Preserver was retarded...we went from Evil Kirk versus Normal Kirk to super advanced aliens wanting to tell Kirk something that really had nothing to do with Evil Kirk. Huh? And then Evil Kirk says "okay, I'll be good now." Double huh?

Kirk is just that cool. He can be both Luke and Han with a dash of Vader thrown in. ;)

I agree that Spectre and Dark Victory are both good stories, and it's a shame that they are let down by Preserver.

I've only read each book once, as they came out, but I remember really liking The Return (great thrill ride), thinking Avenger was lame, really liking Spectre (another great ride), disliking the split structure of Dark Victory (it was more an extended epilogue to Spectre and an extended prologue to Preserver), hating the way Preserver tied it up, skipping Captain's Peril, finding Captain's Blood really boring, and then never reading another one.

I almost forgot: There's also a nuShatnerverse. Collision Course is a new take on Kirk's academy days, totally ignoring the flashbacks in prior Shat books. It's got some interesting parallels to the eleventh Trek film.

Kirk's a petty criminal, Starfleet Academy is a harsh military school, Spock visits a strip club, Kirk steals a Back to the Future flying car, Kirk's got a brother whose sole reason for existing is to drag him into trouble, a Section 31-style group wants Kirk to fight a some sort of secret war full of child soldiers...

It ends with Cadet Kirk stealing the Enterprise from drydock to foil some space criminals.

I actually liked it. It's a shame the second one never arrived.

Nothing wrong with "The Ashes of Eden". A great standalone novel that also enhances "Generations". While the rest of the Shatnerverse is either hit or miss, at least try the one that kicked it all off.
