WoW - Musings & Discussion

I got a question:

So I tried the 14 day trial thing, and I like it, but the locked-out content prevented me from really getting anything from it.

if I buy the base $19.99 (or whatever) version, do I get the first 30 days free?

Hmm. I don't know if they do a free 30-day deal. Not as far as I know. I think the free part is the 10-day trial, which you've done.

They do have something called "Recruit-a-Friend". If you will allow me, I will "recruit" you, and your new characters will get another free 10 days and significant leveling bonuses for 90 days.

As a person who entered WoW recently (2009) the way it worked is you bought the battle chest (the only way to go really...) and it came with the first 30 or 25 days. The battle chest is 40 bucks, and you pretty much need it since it comes with the expansion. I dont even know it if they sell it by itself anymore. All the brick and mortars carry the battle chest

^It's already confirmed that Shattrath and Dalaran will be getting trainers and AHs' in place of portals.
Trainers are confirmed but I don't think it's confirmed they'll train you above level 80. At least not that I've seen. So the trainers are guaranteed to train to 80 but past that?

It matters only as much as it does to people who will think they can keep their hearthstone there. A lot of people hate Dalaran and other major city hubs for being too crowded and lagging them out. If they intend to keep Dal as their hearth then it would matter if they had to go into another city or not.

I know a few people who never go there because their computers can't take it. I find the place crowded and laggy myself sometimes but I'm not one of those who might make it my new home either.

Oh and now Amazon is saying Cata's release date is sometime in January. A definite unlikely date seeing as Blizzard is committed to a release this year and Amazon's previous release date of November 23rd or 26th was just last week. It's funny watching people fuss over the ever postponed release date that's never even been officially announced beyond a vague end of 2010 hope.

^Without the portals there is not much reason to be in Dal or Shatt after you hit 80. You'll be going back to Azeroth for 80 to 85 and the capital cities will be closer. No reason to make Dal and shatt your hearth.

And in a round about way, we've got a semi-official release date of December 7th.

Arena battles and Rated Battlegrounds are only available during an active player versus player combat season. Season nine will begin on December 14th, so be prepared at that time to take your shot at glory!

Arena season begins one week after Cata's release.

I got into the Beta last week; it is pretty sweet. The Goblin and Worgen starting areas are a bit broken right now, but what is there is pretty amazing. Blizzard has really learned alot since TBC when they did their last starting areas and even more since Vanilla. In fact, the quest presentation is a huge step beyond Wrath. Even though for the most part they are the same type of quests (kill x/get y), they are tied together really well and actually become compelling.

Also, the new water is a nice upgrade.

Now it is 100% official:

World of Warcraft(R): Cataclysm(TM) in Stores Starting December 7

IRVINE, Calif., Oct 04, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft(R): Cataclysm(TM), the highly anticipated third expansion for the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game*, will be released starting on December 7, 2010. The expansion will be available on DVD-ROM for Windows(R) XP/Windows Vista(R)/Windows(R) 7 and Macintosh(R) at a suggested retail price of $39.99 and will also be offered as a digital download from the Blizzard Store. A special Collector's Edition packed with bonus items will be available exclusively in retail stores for a suggested retail price of $79.99.

"Cataclysm includes the best content we've ever created for World of Warcraft. It's not just an expansion, but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned leveling experience for those just starting out," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "With the help of our beta testers, we're putting on the final polish, and we look forward to welcoming gamers around the world to enjoy it in just a couple of months."

The first two World of Warcraft expansions, The Burning Crusade(R) and Wrath of the Lich King(R), each shattered PC game sales records upon their release.* In Cataclysm, the face of Azeroth will be forever altered by the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new adventures. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races — worgen and goblins — will join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they'll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.

The beta test for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is currently underway. i cannot wait! i dont even know where i am going to start... roll a worgen, roll a goblin, work on a low level (39 or so) alt to check out the revamped areas, or level my main... so many options!

I'm going to try to take at least a couple days off that week. There's been some good news for prot paladins, but I'm still leaning towards playing my warrior in Cataclysm. I'm having a blast playing mine on live right now. After I get either one of those leveled and geared up, I'll be spending the rest of my time working on my priest.

I'll plan on at least hitting the new starter areas at least once. They look like a lot of fun from what I've seen from videos of the beta.

EDIT - Woot! Just got my time off approved.

Looking forward to Cata... saving a spot for my worgen warlock, hunter and possibly warrior... The lock is my favorite class to play, but I'm on a new server now so I can enjoy leveling from scratch.

At this point I'm looking for new content... I've leveled 7 toons to 80 on both sides. Here's hoping!

I'm going to roll a Goblin Priest. I wonder if "Jareth" is still available.

I would take some time off it I wasn't already taking a week off in December to go on Vacation.
