Wouldn't wanna meet Neelix in a dark alley

I love how Neelix seems docile usually. But when he gets peeved, lookout! He morphs internally, and takes on a psycho kind of vibe.

Like when he saves Kes from the Kazon. Or when he is hallucinating about being in a war. It's like he suddenly has a completely different, scary personality.

I'd say this makes Neelix the deepest and most varied character out of anyone on the crew of Voyager.

What do you all think about this?

I sure wouldn't want to rile him up!

I think Neelix would make a great bodyguard. Especially since he has cooking talent.

He would really give double meaning to the phrase 'To Protect and Serve'.

How tough can he be getting by on one lung with short (Ocampan) expected service life? I suppose since he's living among Talaxians he'll at some point be getting a transplant from a compatible donor.

I always found Neelix a much deeper character than most give him credit for.

I loved "Once Upon A Time" where you finally get to see the "real" Neelix behind the happy face he wears. He's a very sad and tragic character. He fears being alone so much that he clings to people for comfort and goes overboard to seek acceptance due to that same fear.

The way he identifies with Niomi in that ep. and how her lost of her mother brings that fear in him to the surface just showed how well Ethan Philips could step up and tackle his role.

I personally think Ethan is the most underrated and often forgotten actor in the cast. Not only forgotten by the writers but by the fans as well, that's really a shame. :(

On a side note, I also want to give a shout out the the make up and design crew as well. Neelix is one of the most unique and extremely detailed looking aliens we've ever seen on Trek. They really did their homework when it came to creating his look.

He certainly was extremely agile and tough despite having only one lung when he killed the Maquis traitor.

I wouldn't want to cross paths with Neelix in any way. He could probably get downright ugly and insane! Anyway, I agree with exodus. Ethan was very underrated, which I thought was outrageous because he one of THE biggest cut-ups of the cast. He really made me laugh in his interviews and such. I didn't like it that he was underrrated and also underused as Neelix. Some people thought that he was annoying and too cheerful. I'm like HEELLLOO! They need someone with a positive attitude on the show..it makes it more interesting!!

^^Exactly.

Neelix was the only crewman that wasn't lost. Plus, being alone most of his adult life, he was just happy to be around others that needed him.

:) Yep, you're right about that one too. You would think that someone who lost their whole family would be sad all of the time..but not Neelix. He felt better when he was helping others. :)

Actually, I think his "happy face" and attitude was just a mask he wore to hide his inner pain.

Remember how he basically almost sold his soul in "Fair Trade" just to get a map so he'd still be wanted on Voyager? That's the real Neelix. He's desperate, desperate to be needed and loved. He'd do anything to lessen that pain.

Thing is, if Neelix is in a dark alley, he's probably been conned into selling drugs with Wixiban. Now there is a great Talaxian - charming, slimy, unprincipled, pleasant. :)

Oh, absolutely. The first thing I thought when I saw Phlox was 'Michael Westmore just doesn't care anymore, does he?'

The Talaxian design was inspired by the recently released Lion King, and was one of the best alien looks on Voyager.

I've really got to find me a pair of those orange eyed contacts he wears.

Ever notice that Neelix's nose was refined over the years? At the get-go of Voyager, his nose looked like a penis. Some guy I worked with said after the premiere, "What the hell is with that guy who has a dick for a nose??"

You mean from this to this?

You've got a point, the mark on his nose were significantly toned down over the years.

Wixiban, my avatar - currently defaced - had something more of an early Neelix look: here. Much longer chin hair too.

I also liked how Neelix looked less and less "dirty" and malnurished the longer he was on Voyager.
