I know we'll be getting flashbacks to the Shenzou on Star Trek Discovery, like we already have, but as I re-watch the animated TOS series I'm curious if this format could work as well for STD. Cheaper to produce, can use the same actors voices and have 30 minute episodes as well. I am super curious about those years Burnham spent on that ship and this could be a way to learn more about those characters.

Would you watch something like this? What if it was anime?

I would watch a Shenzou live action series. I would watch a Shenzou animated series. I would read a Shenzou comic. If they decided to have Burman wake up and call everything after the first 20 minutes of STD a dream (or a Q-like alternative choice) and continue their mission with no mutuny, I would watch that too. Shenzou seemed to catch the Kirk/Spock/Bones chemistry better than anything since Kirk/Spock/Bones. I like Discovery but Michelle Yeoh's performance is like TOS Kirk meets 09 Robau.

Absolutely this. There was excitement of exploration and friendly banter between the characters, not to mention strong and positive female characters. It was basically exactly the sort of Star Trek I wanted to see. But then everything goes shit and we get a bleak war show about a black ops ship filled with miserable people.

As long as it's better* than TAS, absolutely

*not aimed primarily at children, maybe?
TAS wasn't aimed at children anywhere near as much as it might have been. The original plan was for a group of tween cadets to be the leads, and the pilot script had them saving the Enterprise crew...

I believe you, I guess it felt aimed at children to me because of the perceived production values (or lack thereof)

Captain Georgiou has been the highlight of DSC so far from me. So a pre-war series with her and the Shenzhou would be great.

Plus Star Trek needs a new animated show to make new fans. Clone Wars and Rebels have done wonders for Star Wars with kids.

Rebels doesn’t know what it wants to be.
Clone Wars was ambitious and did the Harry Potter thing and grew up with its audience.

I can't think of any animated series associated with a sci-fi franchise that I thought was any good.

Animated series, sure. They've had enormous success with the whole Clone Wars / Rebels thing on the other franchise, and I'm sure with the right creative team they could do the same here. The CW's dabbling with animated Arrow-verse productions is another example. The prequel novel is apparently pretty well received, and the animated medium could free things up for more fan-happy story ideas, crossovers, and wish lists that would never happen in live action.

ANIME series, no. There're some things that simply don't translate well to Japanese-style storytelling, and IMO a fully westernized setup like Star Trek wouldn't make the cut. Look at the relatively recent anime versions of Marvel properties, for example. None of them are really must-watch (Iron Man came in close, with the whole mechanized soldier theme being an anime staple), and the less said about the "Disk Wars" series, the better...

Mark <---anime fan for 30+ years, baby!

most things with the star wars name are successful but that cartoon sucked.

<shrug> YMMV. Can't win 'em all. Different strokes for different folks, etc.

I'm not a huge fan, but have loved both series as their own take on the SW universe. Neither show was cancelled because no one was watching them, so they were getting something right.

It was boring enough as it was. Captain Georgiou is what Ambien takes when it cant sleep. And I cant imagine cartoon Georgiou being any more exciting than her snooze inducing live action counter part.
