I think that the thrill in Garak dating Ziyal was more in seeing Dukat's reaction to it.

Absolutely, this mundane element spun the wheels of him being a psychopath... destroy all those layers of Dukat when in the first 3 seasons of this brilliant character would've used that affair to his advantage.

But is the ship travelling at impulse or warp? Because if the former, they'll never come across anything and if the latter, they'll never be able to visit anywhere.
(Yes, their speed and the vastness of space bothered me watching Red Dwarf)
It's like "Stargate Universe", the ship is on a pre-programmed past to visit all planets in a sector. Thus creating a ticking clock for the stay at each star system, until the ship jumps back into warp. Depending on the situation, they either have to get back on board in time, or run out the clock before getting destroyed.
Only it's not because of an ancient, mysteries mission, but because of incompetence of changing the ships main orders.
(Yes, in a show with a talking cat - that's still a valid complain!)
