Would you want to see Non/Ex-StarFleet characters in their own show?

Let's say hypothetically that there is a future show, but it stars a Non/Ex-StarFleet crew in a PMC-like or Privatized StarFleet like Company setup where they get their own ship, no StarFleet to back them up; but they operate with other fellow Private Entities that are PMC-like or Private StarFleet like.

Would you want to watch them?

A setup like this could make use of alot of the old vessels from the TNG-VOY era or older while actual current day StarFleet would get all the new and Shiny Vessel designs.

This would also allow a lot of writing freedom to explore life outside of StarFleet and civilian life along with what Non-StarFleet space businesses / entities do when they don't want to deal with StarFleet.

A bit like FireFly, but in a Star Trek Universe with a non-oppressive Government to deal with in the UFP.

They wouldn't be exporing new worlds, they'd be providing security for whoever their masters were. So... nah.

I'd like to see some non Starfleet worldbuilding. Civilians must make up the majority of the Federation after all...

They would be their own masters accepting work / contracts from whomever they choose.

They should certainly have more non-Starfleet settings. You get some sense of that in various shows and movies, but it's largely in the background. On DS9 was probably the most sustained connection to the larger universe, esp thru Quark and his dealings. Syndicates, arms dealers, trafficking, illicit genetic enhancements, etc.

The OP idea IDK. Like A-Team, where they right wrongs for hire? Or Equalizer? Are they Mercs? Is that what "private Star Fleet" means? Dictatorships hire mercs too tho, so what are they about? Sounds like it's not like Han Solo or Firefly, and making a living on the edge and breaking rules but not evil. Not sure I have a clear enough idea of what this would be.

Did you ever see the movie 13 Hours? Do you know how many exciting stories you could generate from them just "providing security?"

At least it's more interesting than "Lower decks" and "Starfleet academy," two ideas which I think need to die, but that just live on like zombies.

How about a Harry Mudd series with Rainn Wilson?

Looks like Jean-Luc Picard is an ex-Starfleet officer getting his own show, so despite all the cries against it here, everyone seems to like the idea there.

If we're getting a series centering around the deposed Emperor of the Terran Empire, a series about the Federation's average Joes who don't serve in Starfleet isn't such a crazy idea.

They're not "Average Joes", just retired / former StarFleet

Would depend on the characters, if they were interesting, engaging and likeable. The likes of the animated fan series Aurora shows how well a civilian concept would work, with focus on characters and not high-action (granted they're not former Starfleet, but it would be nice to see life out with the fleet).

Can somebody reboot "Assignment: Earth"? Although I can't imagine worthy replacements for Robert Lansing and Teri Garr. Isis would be easy, since she's a shape-shifter.

I've thought-experimented the idea of a show that takes place in a post-Voyager Star Trek where the Federation becomes more controlling and militaristic following fear over the Dominion War, and the main characters rebel against Starfleet to try to bring back Starfleet principles of exploration and freedom.

I think an interesting premise could be built around a Federation diplomat, or team of diplomats who occasionally travel on starfleet ships but mostly work in the civilian Federation world.

If you could spin it with colony life out on the frontier, really combining a lot of Western style themes in to it then it could be interesting. But, it would have to be well written, or possibly combined with a few Starfleet officers to help fill out the roles.

I'd be interested in a Trek show which took place outside of Starfleet. Part of what made DS9 such an interesting show was what a large proportion of the regular cast (Kira, Odo, Quark, Garak, etc) were not actually Starfleet.

That said, I'd have no interest in seeing a "ex-Starfleet mercenaries" show. Mostly because it would ruin a lot of the mystique of Starfleet being (at least by the 24th century) a largely post-capitalist, post-scarcity culture. I mean, money canonically doesn't exist in most of the Federation (though the Bolians seem to have a capitalist economy). There are no post-TOS references to private corporations in the Federation either. It would be hard for ex-Starfleet officers to "rent themselves out" unless they crossed over to work for a foreign power or someone in the criminal underworld.

The was mention in a TNG episode of planets in the Federation being owned by corporations.
On the other hand there was no mention of this.
Robert Lansing was a pretty stiff actor, and Teri Garr was in one of her first acting jobs. There would probably be a long list of actors who could do the roles better.
