How strongly do you feel about the whole Axanar copyright lawsuit mess?

Would you sign a petition to CBS / Paramount regarding their lawsuit against Axanar??

Your options are:

1) No, I don't care about Axanar.
2) Yes, I'd asked them to drop it. It was stupid to do in the first place.
3) Yes, I'd ask them to settle out of court. Take an easy win and make it go away.
4) Yes, I'd ask them to NOT settle and take it to trial. This is too important to let go.

This is a hypothetical question. I have no intention of starting any petitions.

I post about it here, because it is the current IT discussion. But I don't care enough about what CBS does one way or the other to sign a petition.

I agree with the above poster. I don't really care one way or the other.

However, I think that guidelines should be made for fan productions.

So sorry, did you want me to add another option: "Yes, ask them to file a criminal complaint against Axanar staff for theft and/or fraud"??

IANAL, but I would sign a petition arguing for a settlement. I think Ares Studios was an egregious misuse of another party's IP, and I think the studios were in the right to sue and would probably win in open court, but I hope a settlement can be reached that can establish boundaries for fan works. Getting a pound of flesh from Alec Peters seems to me to be appropriate, but I would not like to see CBS/P take a hard line on more innocuous projects like New Voyages or Trek In the Park.

5. None of the above.
5. I'm interested in how this all turns out, but I don't think my signature on a petition would or should make a difference as to what CBS and Paramount decide to do.

I'm mainly interested in how it affects other fan films, so I might join in asking them not to be unduly restrictive in their guidelines.

NO, Axanar has used up any good will they might have had. Even if they are allowed to continue, my bet is they wasted all the $$ and will have to have another fund drive to make the movie.

I don't sign petitions, and I don't really care whether Axanar gets made or not.

But it wouldn't bother me a bit to see a bigmouth bully take a beatdown. Financially speaking, of course. ;)

5.) I support CBS/Paramount's right to decide what they do with their intellectual property. If they want to pursue a lawsuit or a settlement (or not) then I'll support that decision.

So, I wouldn't be signing any petition, but neither am I completely apathetic towards the whole mess.

Ultimately, CBS are the wronged party here so however they want to resolve this is their decision entirely. I don't personally agree that Axanar deserves any leniency whatsoever, but in fairness their suit is about copyright infringement only, and the issues with Axanar go much deeper than that. If we were only talking about using Trek IP in an otherwise blameless fan film, I'd be praising their restraint.

No options regarding canines and altercations? Disappointing.

I voted 'don't care'. I'm enjoying the ongoing soap opera, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure it would've been any good in either their original desired vision or whatever it ends up being. I mean, the calibre of people now involved don't inspire confidence, do they?

I thought prelude looked good, and i thought axanar was going to look good. That was before the lawsuit, when all the evidence convinced me team axanar was getting out of hand. I'd like to see them slapped down for abusing the goodwill of CBS. Nonetheless, I still don't really care one way or the other

Agree if it was any one other than Alex Peters and Axnar I would be more on the fans side. However after how Alex has acted he deserves what he gets.

I'd be willing to sign a petition asking (politely) for certain guidelines but the actual lawsuit is between CBS/P and Axanar and we're only the peanut gallery.

The only thing I care about is how it affects other fan films and unfortunately it looks like the damage has already been done. A petition one way or another won't change that.
