I just noticed that the TC is Zap Brannigan...if he's recruiting for this mission, then he's in command...I'm not sure that ship is safe.
Both are VERY valid points!Yes, as long as my name appears in the opening credits. I figure I'm relatively safe, then.
Oh, we'll be fine. Those robots have pre-set kill limits!
If we suddenly had a real starship, able to travel as far and fast as the ones on TV, and with no relativity "time dilation" problems, would you volunteer for a multi-year mission?
You'd miss a lot of people and things back home, but you'd get out there and see the galaxy.
It's hard to say what I'd decide. On the one hand, yeah, let's blow this pop stand. But on the other hand, the solar systems you'd explore might all be lifeless. And if you did find life finally, it might be some mold and bacteria on a slimy planet with nothing much to offer.
And your life on a starship might be even more confining and limiting than the daily grind you have now. It might be like working in an office building you never get to step outside of.
But I think there'd be no shortage of volunteers.
Perhaps more like living in a small isolated town somewhere, or on a island community. At the speed the ships move in the various series, the time between star system would be measure in days. Depending upon what it is you do aboard, there would be opportunities to leave the ship for investigations, to explore, or simply to stretch your legs in a unique environment. And your life on a starship might be even more confining and limiting than the daily grind you have now. It might be like working in an office building you never get to step outside of.
True, but if given the chance to just go to some place like Mars for a extended visit, then return to Earth, wouldn't you want too? Even knowing in advance that it's (probably) completely lifeless.the solar systems you'd explore might all be lifeless
