Simple question: suppose Obama were willing to use a few hours of down time to portray himself in one or two scenes of The Avengers. Would you like to see this? Should Marvel/Whedon make the offer?

Myself, I think it'd be totally awesome. Tony Stark, Cap, the Hulk, Thor, ScarJo, Renner, SLJ's Nick Fury, and Number 44 himself, all in one epic movie? That would be win so pure it might have to be added to the periodic table.

:techman:

nah, just get a looky-likey and shoot him from behind.

unless, they're recreating the scene from Ultimates where W asked Cap what he thought of the 21st century, 'cool or uncool' and he replied 'Cool, Mr. President'...

No. Because it would mean having to listen to a plethora of idiots scream in faux outrage and indignation.

^ :rommie: That would indeed be cool, but require too much of his time, methinks...

No. Because it would mean having to listen to a plethora of idiots scream in faux outrage and indignation.
And they aren't going to do that anyway? :p

Hey.. he's the President of the USA and it is his duty to support the US industry.

Movies are a big industry and appearing in a movie would surely boost sales so.. ;)

This brings up speculation about "End of Time Part I" when they used President Obama there were some wondering if it was actually going to be him and if he was a major Who fan.

I think it would be awesome. I am not a US citizen and I don't care about US politics in any way shape or form. I just think it would be badass for a sitting US president to play the actual role in a movie.

If I had President Obama in "The Avengers" it would be in a scene where he is giving Nick Fury his orders to assemble the Avengers. "Director Fury, America has need of it's heroes to come together in a time of need to protect her from a threat so large that no single hero can and that our military is ill equip to deal with. So I am as of this date issuing a Presidential order for you to assemble together our countries greatest heroes in an attempt to deal with the threat we will inevitably face. I am now establishing the Avengers Initiative. Shield will have full operational command and authority over these Avengers and you of course will report directly to me." Or something like that.

I'd actually be tempted to see the movie if it had Obama in it. Otherwise though I'm giving this a pass.

I'd love to see him do it from a personal choice perspective, but having said that I don't think he actually should. Too much potential for attacks in the polarised world of US politics. "Obama would rather spend time appearing in blockbusters than recession busting!" etc. *yawn* why open yourself up to that crap if you don't need to. It's a shame, but the POTUS is probably off limits for the duration of his term.

Isn't Stephen Colbert the President of the Marvel Universe? He's either that or Adam Warlock's mother; I can't ever remember.

Use a lookalike. Using the actual President, aside from the logistical issues involved and the political stink it would raise, would serve to date the film within a few years. Think of all the Superman comics with Presdient Kennedy. How do Lois and Jimmy look much the same today as they did when Kal-El was hanging out with JFK fifty years ago? That's leaving aside all the Crisises and reboots and whatnot. Those early Silver Age books where dated even before CoIE.

My, err, vote for a lookalike for President Obama (and thanks to Admiral Young and Lieut. Arex for using the proper form of address) would be Harry Lennix. He not only looks kind of like President Obama, he sounds a lot like him.

Although let's think about this. For a long time now, it's been trendy in TV and movies to suggest a futuristic or alternate reality by casting a black actor as the President of the United States. Now we have an African-American chief executive, so to keep pace, the new default for TV and movies is probably going to be female presidents -- something 24 has already done (after previously giving us a couple of black presidents).

In fact, the '90s animated X-Men featured a female POTUS in its first season, though she was eventually defeated in an election by Senator Kelly.
