Would you like looks, uniforms and such re-imagined?

So I was thinking.

When TMP came, tptb had re-imagined Klingons. Of course they didn't have some grand plan about two different Klingon races or whatever is the daily explanation for the different Klingon looks, they simply had a larger budget and could now make them really "alien".

Would you like that Discovery simply re-imagined Star Trek. Gave that generation a whole new sort of uniform, not giving any thought of the 60s uniform.

Simply saying: Look, they had a shitty budget in the 60s, we have more money, and we can make it look really good.

I gave it some thought and yes, yes I would like them to re-imagine Trek. Not 100%, but uniforms, weapons, aliens, yes I want it to look good. There's no need to be handicapped by low budget 60s ideas.

Then what would be the point in setting it in the 2250s? Why not make it the 2210s or 2400s instead, so that it is far more removed from what has been established. I don't mind a few tweaks here and there but I'm expecting something that's very faithful to the canon of the real Trek universe.

Star Trek wasn't low budget, it was very expensive to make. But I agree with the principle - 60s production values and a 60s view of the future aren't going to make a successful show in 2017. They should do what they need to do to update it, probably even more so than the Kelvinverse did as TV production standards for genre shows are now light years ahead of what they were when ENT was being conceived.

Too much focus and whining on the looks of the show. It's about stories people, not shirts.

I honestly don't get it. Story and narrative is most important, and is what we talk about for years to come, not the visuals, so why are people getting so hung up on it?

If we look at Trek fandoms own history with visual changes to the look of things, we can see that it barely matters too. A lot was made of ENT supposedly looking more modern than TOS, but 16 years after ENT launched, it's rarely a point raised. ST09's bridge and ship design was once again a huge focus for the complainers back in '08/09 - barely an issue now. So historical evidence shows that our fandom moves on from visual changes very damn quickly, and yet with the start of each new show and movie, we get the same rubbish spouted as we've seen recently in regards to Discovery's own changes to Trek's look.

Just enjoy the stories and characters, guys. THAT is what we will be talking about in 20 years.

I don't know. Why are the same people who constantly say that the visuals don't matter so adamant that the visuals need to be changed?

As I have said before, I don't want full re-imagination, I want an update in quality while maintaining the style and feel of the original. A bit like they did in Rogue One, but somewhat more updated (due the starting point being 60's TV quality rather than 70's movie quality.)

Characters and narratives are very important but television and film is a visual medium. The aesthetic aspects of the Star Trek were part of its iconic appeal. Many fans love to focus on the visuals and there's nothing wrong with that. People love the art work that goes into the ship designs, and some fans consider the Enterprise just as much a character as members of the cast. I hope Star Trek: Discovery is a feast for the eyes.

I wouldn't want it for 'change' sake. But if they re-imagined things like the uniforms along the line of what JJ Abrams did for nu-ST; I wouldn't mind.

I don't expect the visuals or uniforms in DSC to look as low-budget as they did in the original series, no.

That said, I do think there's interesting possibilities for DSC's designers to keep to the general look and feel of TOS while updating the effects to modern standards. I don't see any disconnect between the two extremes.

(For instance, the Kelvin as shown in ST09. It predates the divergence between Prime and Kelvin timelines, and I honestly think that it is entirely compatible with the general look and feel of TOS. I'd say it's a great example of Prime timeline continuity, done with modern effects budgets.)

As we fans are being asked to flip the bill for this STAR TREK series, Discovery's got the funds to -- rightfully -- say "to hell with canon."

This would be my preference as well. If they did a modern-looking uniform that updated The Cage aesthetic in the same way the Kelvinverse movies have updated the TOS uniforms, I'd be happy with that. I'm less bothered by the technology, but I think some looking futuristic from 2017's perspective while maintaining a general TOS-like aesthetic shouldn't be too hard for a creative type to handle.

Having said that, if they go with a completely different uniform style, I'll be mildly disappointed but it won't be a deal-breaker. After all, we've seen uniform variations available throughout Trek's history, from Kirk's wrap-around in TOS to the short-sleeve version in TMP to the skant in TNG and the jumpsuit in TNG/DS9. It's not impossible Starfleet had different type uniforms available for officers to wear in the 2250s.

It wasn't a low budget show.

This is one of those things that keeps getting thrown around that drives me crazy. Star Trek was one of the more expensive shows on television in its day. Sometimes people seem to confuse the primitive technology (by today's standards) with little money being spent. Watch an episode of TOS and then compare it to a contemporaneous episode of Doctor Who. Then you'll see what cheap science fiction looked like in the late 1960s.

It would be nice if female crewmen wore skirts reminiscent of TOS, I always thought they looked better than the TNG uniforms. On the other hand the ENT ones were most realistic, placing comfort first.
